Ginko
I hope it's okay to start a new topic on this mods, apologies if it's not. I thought I'd start a thread about the TV show as one poster recommended a few days ago because it seems to be a popular show here on VT. I found myself posting in the TV Show thread and realised I was writing an awful lot about the show so perhaps having it's own thread may help to avoid some people who haven't yet watched the show having some things spoiled for them. However, I'm not out to talk about spoilers so I'll try and be careful. But just as a warning, in the rest of my post there may be things talked about that people who have not yet watched the show may want to avoid reading. Anyway, in continuation of the talk from the TV Show thread... He's been complaining the first couple of episodes have been a bit meh and that the pace is too slow I'd normally say he is perfectly entitled to his wrong opinion, but what the actual ****? Ha well we watched all of season one which I think is only seven episodes and not where the season was meant to break. I think it was the Writer's Strike way back when was the cause for the delay if my memory serves me. Anyway, needless to say, my dad's hooked now. I knew he wouldn't let me down. As for Breaking Bad being pacey, I term pacey as to mean that every episode is always very fast-paced with lots going on whereas, to me, Breaking Bad isn't like that. I think of it as a show that generally starts off slow in the first few episodes of the season before building into chaos towards the season finale. I don't have a problem with this formula at all, in fact I think Breaking Bad is great when it's at it's slower points. There's lots of long drawn out scenes with lots of silence which really add to the mood and the style of the show. To me it lets the cinematography and the facial expressions and body language of the characters tell the story. Dialogue is used more sparingly to create more realism but when the characters do speak there is a reason for every word they say. I'm no expert but as a wannabe screenwriter and having read a fair few books on the subject, that is exactly how it should be. Every scene, every word said by the character, every action taken is intended to have meaning to push the story forward or to divulge important information about that character or the plot. Breaking Bad is the best TV show I've ever seen that does this. It is an incredibly well written show. For example, having watched season one back, the scenes in which Walt is teaching Chemistry in school have such deep meaning. Sometimes it's to show how incredibly intelligent and over-qualified he is to be working in a high school. Other times it's to plant the seed for an idea that will eventually be used later in the show to dramatic effect. However, I think it's the first episode in which Walt says words to the effect that Chemistry by definition is change, and that there is the theme of the entire show. One man's change from mild-mannered genius/teacher/family man to a dangerous criminal. It's incredibly clever. I wish I could write half as well as that. I think season one is less pacey than the rest in particular however because it needs to be for dramatic effect. It's meant to be about this guy being forced into this dark underworld and how despite being incredibly intelligent, how completely unprepared and forced into it he truly is. If the first season had a faster pace to it then it wouldn't work so well because it's meant to be a somewhat realistic, gritty, slow and dark transformation from high school teacher to meth cook. That's just my opinion however. Anyway, sorry for the long OP. Feel free to chat about the show in here if you like. I'm always up for discussing it at length. Ginko
I strongly suggest people give it a chance. Stick with it through the first season because it really is top notch. Season 5 airs tomorrow in the States I believe. Can't wait.
The_Rev
Every one of your posts gives me the impression that you dont care much for the first season. I dont get why, I think it's great. I think later seasons are better but only because you have the context of what has already happened up to that point, but I think S1 E1 is one of the finest hours of television ever made. If the first three minutes dont grab you then **** knows what will.

No, not at all, I love the first season just as much as the rest I just think it's a little slow paced at times is all but for a very good reason. I only meant to say that I could understand if new viewers thought it was a bit slow after the first couple of episodes (admittedly episode 2 is slower that the first though). It comes from having recommended it to a few people, like my dad and a few friends beforehand and some of them did say to me it was a little slow to start. I personally didn't notice when I first started watching it, I was immediately hooked so I didn't intend to give out that impression.
dAVe80
I remember first watching it, and thinking I'm not going to be able to get over that it's Hal from Malcolm In The Middle. How wrong I was! Walter White is a **** bad ass!
saturdaygig
Stick with it through the first season Stick with it ?!?! Season one is fabulous (aside from the slightly dodgy episode 2). My theory for the new season is that Walt will become the kingpin of meth supply, now that Gus and everyone else are dealt with. Since they've said season 5 will be the last one, I think either Jesse or Walt will die at the end. I'd go with Jesse. This ain't a spoiler mind, its a prediction. tijuana
This is by far the best thing still on TV at the moment. Watched all 4 seasons so far and can't wait for the premier tonight. I recommend this to anyone who owns a TV. I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
Brumerican
I have watched up to season 4 and it really is excellent but as for it being the best thing that is on TV right now ? I don't think so . Well not until they stop repeating The Sopranos on Sky Atlantic at least.

coda
There's no way I can wait for the whole season to air before watching this. Like a meth addict I'll be frantically looking for the opener tomorrow.

Hey, I'm a huge fan and was hooked from the start but recently people I know have told me that it starts off slow. That's their opinion not mine, it was just some friendly advice for anyone who is thinking of starting to watch it. As for your predictions on season 5, I think you might not be too far off, although I'm still unsure which of them will die. I think one of them will kill the other one and that they will turn on each other. I'm really looking forward to watching it tomorrow though. I can't **** wait biiitch. ED
I think Walt will have to kill Hank or get him on board pretty soon. Jesse will find out Walt has done those terrible things like watch his gf die or poison that kid, probably before the second half or S5 next year. Then it might become a proper face off
YLN
Why I fell in love with breaking bad was how he used chemistry to solve problems. Like the fulminated mercury or the hydrofluoric acid not dissolving polyethylene. He was like the McGyver of chemistry. While it has moved away from that and more towards the sensational and grippingly tense, it is still my favourite ever television drama.
