John Gregory

Did anybody listen to Ian Taylor this morning going on about why it has gone downhill at the Villa, he reckons its always been the lack of finance for giving it the final push to take us to the top,

Mind you he also said John Gregory is going to apply for the Villa Job and he is desperate for it.

I think he could be joking about him applying for the job. I follow him on twitter and its clear the John loves the villa. You could well blame Ellis for not giving him that final push although he did want to spend the money on Izzit!

I'd loe to see John as villa manager vs the blues with Ian Taylor as assistant!

Yeah listened to in the car.

Great interview and you're right said Johnny Gregs would love the job.

Shame the club can't get Bruce Mk2 involved somehow.

What a top bloke Ian Taylor is!

Favourite post match interview with John Gregory manager of AVFC was when we went top of league at Sheff Wed (was there & Ian Taylor was sat with the fans cos injured)......... the day Bozzy & Yorke starring in a porn video hit the headlines...... Asked what he was going to do about it - JG retorted with a wry smile & just said "Play it on the team coach on the way home what do you think?"

Brilliant!

I remember we went top for about a day or 2 in 01/02 and he wanted Johan Micoud and we never bid and he went on to be brilliant for Werder in Bundesliga.

I think that you will find that somewhere during Gregory's reign, we had the longest sustained period at he top of the Premier League of any club.

And we didn't even qualify for Europe

Appointing him as manager would be a disaster. Don't doubt him caring but we need to stop living in the past and being so obsessed with yesterday. GT mark 2 is a great example of this, Dalglish at Liverpool too, plus JG has been out of the game here for too long, almost relegated teams in other countries and would do the same to us.

Lets try and look forward for once.

It was Forlan that made him resign in the end wasn't it ?

He done a deal for a few million for him and Ellis pulled the plug .. Forlan joined Man U a short while later

Ahh, I loved Gregory's reign. He was nuts and he bought some overpriced old rot (Watson? Stone?), but it was so much fun! And we never looked like we feared anyone in those days.

I remember him taking over when we right down in it. I think it was the 4-1 away win at Everton that suddenly made me realise something interesting was going on. What was that, our third win on the bounce as we went from around the drop zone to a storming finish.

It seems he's been rather awful in all of his other managerial appointments, and he'd almost certainly be a disaster now, but somehow it clicked at that time at the Villa to produce one hell of an interesting four years or so.

"Some people seem a bit put out that we're top of the league. Well, I'm sorry about that." :)

Good memories of Gregory at the helm. I bet that if we replaced AM with JG in March, we would have been safe in April.

That said, he is not the man to take us forward, for the reasons mentioned above.

Love the guy, though.

Remember this very well, thought it was hilarious at the time, remember there was a song about this incident and Dwight but just can not remember what it was, great times though we were respected then as a team.

Johnny Gregg is a legend. I absolutely love the bloke.

People may be right that he wouldn't be the right choice but I'd chop my nuts off for a chance to see him back managing the Villa for a season or two.

He has so much passion for the club and in his reign that clearly passed through to the players. Yes, he's been in the wilderness for a while but I seriously believe he'd give the club such a kick up the ass that we'd be flying again.

Shame that during his reign he never got the backing to complete the job. I know during the January, when we were top, there was a rumor he wanted to bring in Juninho or Vieri. Basically, either of these players may have been the final piece to take us over the line. In the end, he got **** over by Collymore (who to this day, when he waffles about the Villa, I can't take seriously because if he loved us that much, he'd have not spent most his time slapping Swedes and playing shyte), made an with the Ginola signing (lazy bastard) and then the whole Yorke thing was a bit unsavory for all involved.

Having spoken to one of Collymore's relatives - who stopped would you beleive to help me change a tyre near Cannock when I was on my way to the cup SF game V Blackburn a couple of years ago -

He said JG was completely unsupportive with Stan and he's still quite bitter about it because he wanted so much to do well for Villa - JG didn't understand depression at all and handled the whole matter very badly. MON for all his faults is a bit more understanding and Collymore loves him because when he broke his leg at Leicester - MON stayed with him at the hospital the whole night to make sure he was OK.

To be fair he had a great squad to work with, just needed a couple of additions to go the next step,

Dont really give a hoot about Stan, over rated and talks total tripe, all the incidents he had that were published in the media just show a bit of what the managers had to put up with him at the time, Can understand JG frustration, how can anybody having the lifestyle adoration and money they had at this time expect any normal person to see why they are depressed.

Now there's a letter I'd love to see a leaked copy of...

"Dear Mr Gregory

Thank you very much for your letter of application for the post of manager of Aston Villa Football Club, with which you enclosed a CV detailing your experience with the Club over ten years ago and your managerial career since then.

As you will probably be aware, we received a high level of applications for this post and, unfortunately...(etc., etc.)"

:)
