I believe it was the persistent injuries to players like Ronaldo and Michael Owen which really led to the game moving to the virtual non contract support it has become over the past half decade or so. It can't be a coincidence that all of a sudden we have quite a few strikers who are almost averaging a goal a game of late. Yeah there was more contact, but there was even more when maradonna played, or look at a george best video for some rough treatment. It was notable how much his physique changed, you can't change the skeleton though and weak points are knees and ankles. Del Piero, Vialli and a few others all went through this crazy transformation at a similar time too they suffered a bit less from it though. Ronaldo was never meant to be as big as he got when he moved to Italy. Put that together with having to put up with some rough tackles and you get wrecked knees. Shame.
