Daniel Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 WEST Ham striker John Carew has been declared bankrupt over unpaid tax. The ruling was made at London’s High Court following proceedings brought by HM Revenue and Customs. The 6ft 5in Norwegian international — who earned £40,000 a week at former club Aston Villa — is believed to owe a six-figure sum. Agent Per Flod blamed a mix-up over a French tax bill from his time as a Lyon player. http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/news/4305286/West-Ham-striker-John-Carew-declared-bankrupt-over-tax.html
MrDuck Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Ouch. He ain't gonna be earning much more from his football.
Phumfeinz Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I just don't understand how anyone who earns that kind of money can ever be bankrupt.
Czechlad Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 I just don't understand how anyone who earns that kind of money can ever be bankrupt. You have to have extremely poor money management to be making that much and manage to spend it all. What the hell does he spend it all on (besides women)?
rosenthal Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Six-figure sum isn't a problem for Carew, bankrupt doesn't necessarily mean he's out of money, he sits on appartments valued at £10m in Oslo. The court declare him bankrupt to seize control of his finances, after a disagrement about how much tax he still owe after the Villa transfer from Lyon. The french claim 1m euro, while Carew and his agent say it should be 300k.
TrentVilla Posted May 9, 2012 Moderator Posted May 9, 2012 Him being declared bankrupt over a tax bill doesn't mean he has no money/assets.
Zatman Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Carew and Freidel in last year. Probably taking financial advice from MON
TrentVilla Posted May 9, 2012 Moderator Posted May 9, 2012 Carew and Freidel in last year. Probably taking financial advice from MON O'Neill going richer in the last year thanks to a payoff, in fact perhaps they took advice from Mr Lerner:)
BOF Posted May 9, 2012 Moderator Posted May 9, 2012 Hopefully that's a Doug Ellis 6-figure sum i.e. £1,000.00
tarjei Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Was in the news over here the other day. Carew said that he has much more than that in capital and can easily pay the money, but the lawyer was late with the paperwork, hence they declared him bankrupt. Carew and the laywer is claiming the sum is around 300.000 euros. He also said that Lyon had given him the impression that he didn't need to worry about tax estimation - that it was taken care of, so he was surprised when he got a letter in the mail about 18 months ago. Apparently they had been sending letters to his former address in France.

Papillon Posted May 9, 2012 Posted May 9, 2012 Broke? Yeah right! Just because he forgot to pay a bill he probably didn't know exists, doesn't mean he is broke. I would guess he has real-estate in Oslo and London as well as equity at around 10 million pounds, easily. Probably even more.
