Surely the Mudryk deal was some kind of money laundering? He looked a fine enough player at Donetsk but the amount spent on him was absurd.

Wasnt Arsenal looking tp bid about 50 million and Brentford about 20 ?

Not without the right manager they won't and even then could need time

I dunno, Poch should be the right manager and whilst they've wasted a lot of money but there's still huge amounts of talent in the team and they'll sign more.

GK: Kepa, Mendy

RB: Reece James, Azpilicueta

CB: Koulibaly, Fofana, Badiashile, Colwill, Chalobah

LB: Chilwell, Cucurella

CM: Enzo, Kovacic, Carney, Gallagher

Wingers: Sterling, Madueke, Mudryk, Pulisic, Ziyech

Strikers: Nkunku, Havertz, Broja

Nkunku has the potential to take the league by storm, that defence + Enzo *should* be good. The rest of their midfield needs work - if they're smart theyll be gunning for Ours and Brightons midfielders

The manager isn't the problem, neither are the players

The mentality and club culture is the problem

Their revenue was £481m in their last accounts. They'll be part of the 'big 6' for a while yet regardless of whether their on field form is deserving of the title

Their revenue would decrease, at least relative to other clubs, if they spent years in mid-table. Losing as many games as they won isn't a great attraction to the corporate pound.

In any case, I know it would be a good while yet and they probably will be back in the top 6 mix within the next season or two, BUT supposing they mess up the next couple of manager appointments and then get held back by more rigourously enforcement FFP leaving them unable to pass mid-table, how long before another team takes their big 6 place?

With the media's long held love of Newcastle (I still remember $ky covering Michael Owen's signing like it was a monarch's coronation), I wonder if they'd be knocking Chelsea or maybe even Spurs out within say 4 to 6 years or just creating a 'big 7'?

Two more questions -

Why does there even need to be a 'big X', where X is 4, 5 or 6, depending on the decade since the nineties? I don't remember that artificial concept before the Premier League was created, yet top league football had been around for a century previous.

How large could X be, if a big club like Villa or Newcastle achieved continuous success over the 5+ years?

Lampard has 19 points in 28 Premier League games this season

But add that to Gerrard's points average and it'd be half decent.

People said they couldn't play together, but Lampard and Gerrard as co-managers equals double bubble! They even rhyme!

Not disagreeing at all, but what does a club mentality and culture actually mean in demonstrable terms? After all, if the investment is there, they're not actively trying to recruit bad staff and players or make wrong decisions.

Phoning it in, playing at 70%

Personally I think footballers are proper skiving bastards, any excuse to drop off and they will

Look at Chelseas second seasons with Jose, conte and tuchel, they just gave up

Chelsea are not as bad as how they're playing buy while everyone blames the owner and Frank who cares

We could have it coming....the Thursday to Sunday game drop off caused by the EL is a huge myth that the players take advantage of

I guess that came about with the new CL format. Back in the day of course only the league winner’s qualified for the European Cup so it would have been termed “the big one” and pornhub probably already have the copyright for that term 😝

I think it was a bit early with Tuchel but Conte and Mourinho have track records of it eventually going tits up.  The ultimate destroy and exit managers.  Chelsea have plumbed new depths this time under Lampard because he is out of his depth and the squad is so unbalanced which I think is different to Conte and Mourinho.

Weirdest thing about all these conversations is the narrative x teams have had a bad season and it won't happen next season. We demonstrably have a manager that on form has put us in the top 4 since he joined and is loving life after the shit he got from the Arsenal stint and people think we won't be in the mix next season because of more than a decade of can't have nice things. **** that and all the other teams. We're ascending

It doesn't take much though to go from lower mid-table to chasing the top 6 though. See: us this season. Chelsea have still got a decent squad.

Definitely. The correct management structure and work ethos could see them back in the top 6 as early as next season.

My earlier posts were purely hypothetical. I think it's too early to predict the medium term top level demise of either Chelsea or Spurs.
