Eames
I used to be very good at hockey. Severe laziness was my downfall. I stopped playing when I went to Uni and became more interested in Girls, booze and kebabs! Yeah that happened to me. County Champion cyclist for 10 mile TT (21'59" PB) (Under 18s) then went to Uni in London. Impossible to train properly, booze, kebabs, Greggs the bakers and girls ruined it all. Oh and that pesky knee re-construction.
irreverentad
I think I am one of those people who likes having 'wasted talent'. The fear of failure outweighs the small chance of success. I am comfortable with thinking of what might have been rather than to have tried properly and failed.
wiggyrichard
I was West Midlands gymnastic champion 2 years running when i was 8-10 years years old, the same year i was named county footballer of the year. I was asked to take up gymnastics full time which would have meant training more or less every day of the week and knocking football on the head...i chose football. I spent time at couple of schools of excellance (including nutmegging Jermaine Pennant when he was at Notts County) but was never good enough. Ended up playing in the Midlands Alliance then knocking football on the head all together. Maybe i should have chose gymnastics.
JMilnereatsnails
A school friend of mine who I've not seen for a number of years now was amazing at Snooker. It started when he needed somewhere to go while he bunked off school, then the needed to bunk off school to regularly practice. He would knock in 80+ breaks for fun and on occassion 100+ this was as a 15 year-old and was a real joy to watch. Then alcohol became fun, he met a girl, knocked her up and got a job as an electrician. Not much money in Snooker anyway, he said.
legov
Do you or anyone you know have any talents that go to waste? I dont really have any that I can think of I'm pretty much an average joe in most things, my flat mate is sitting down in the room drawing a picture and its **** amazing I have told him hundreds of times that he should try and make some money off the pictures that he draws but he just cant be arsed he is currently copying a picture out of a lord of the rings book that he has got and it is brilliant, there are pictures that he has drew all over the flat (some that he has copied others that he has done from the top his head) the thing is he takes real time in them I mean hours and hours of work. I just cant help to think that if I had a talent like that then I would sit there drawing pictures of justin beaber, beyonce and whoever else the **** is popular and sell them on ebay or somehing, I am pretty sure that you would make a fair whack of money doing that but he doesnt seem interested and only actually sits down and puts time and effort into it every now and again so do you know anyone that is brilliant at something and does nothing about it??? Imo it'd be more of a waste if he just did it for the money. Some things are more beautiful when done purely out of interest or curiosity. Dunno about beautiful, but I find I enjoy things more if I don't HAVE to do them. I've had fun playing music over the years, and I like writing. But if I had to do either for a living, I know I would almost instantly hate them. As I said elsewhere (possibly in this thread), I very much lack the "Protestant work ethic", and I tend to associate enjoyable things with skiving. What do you do for a living again Birthday-Man? My Grandad was one of the best snooker players in the country in the 50s and 60s. He was still the best player at his club when he was 70 years old and his eyesight was on the way out. He could have been a pro (or what passed for pro back then anyway) but it would have meant endless exhibition matches in far flung corners of the country back in the days when we didnt have a motorway network and the fastest cars the man in the street could buy would do about 50mph. He had a young family and didnt want to spend the time away from home when he could earn more money in a regular job. A real shame because if he had been 25 years younger then there is every chance he would have made quite a bit of money out of the game. I guess timing is everything.
