Oh shit.

South Carolina primary: Exit polls suggest Gingrich win

Exit polls predict a big win for Newt Gingrich over Mitt Romney in South Carolina's primary, the latest leg of the battle for the Republican candidacy in the US presidential election.

Mr Romney told supporters the race was now "getting even more interesting".

The South Carolina victor has won the nomination in each election since 1980.

Correspondents say the latest outcome is almost certain to turn the race for the presidential candidacy into a long, hard-fought contest.

US networks called the vote in the former House speaker's favour shortly after polls closed, as exit polls predicted a margin of victory for Mr Gingrich of around 10%.

Other Republican hopefuls, former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum and Texas representative Ron Paul trailed badly.

BBC North America editor Mark Mardell, in South Carolina, says that if confirmed, a Gingrich win is important, because all along the story of this race has been the search by Conservatives for an alternative to Mitt Romney.

It looks like victory for Newt, and a big one. If it is true, it is important.

All along the story of this race has been the search by Conservatives for an alternative to Mitt Romney.

It's just possible they have settled on Gingrich.

At the very least such a result would puncture the sense that eventually Romney will triumph. It slows his momentum.

And I suspect that it will mean the race will get very nasty indeed.

One thing I wouldn't take too seriously.

Ever since 1980, the Republican winner of the South Carolina race has gone on to win the party's nomination.

It is an interesting historical fact but it is certainly not an iron law.

It is just possible they have settled on Mr Gingrich, and at the very least such a result will puncture the sense that eventually Mr Romney will triumph, our correspondent adds.

I generally support the Republicans, as my economic beliefs lean strongly to the right; but as an atheist I have real problems associating myself with these moronic bible bashers.

In addition to this, Republican or not, one must also acknowledge that Bush was deeply stupid, whilst Obama is highly intelligent... most embarrassing.

As for the voter's fascination with sexual peccadillos... what extraordinary things people find interesting.

Were I a Yank, I'm not at all sure how I would vote.

I'm much the same but really its an easy decision to vote democrat, as said above they aren't really left in their economic view either.

Thanks, I don't think I've ever had 2 people (also andyjsg) agree with me before... I must try to be more controversial.

However, I don't quite agree with the Democrats not being lefties, even if they are not as looney as their British bretheren.

The democrats are about as left wing as the Tories. The US doesn't have a left wing party (there are a number of people who would claim the same thing about the UK).

Your point about the Democrats and Tories may be true.

Where I disagree, is that we may have a Tory government, but it is totally hamstrung... so this society still remains seriously socialist.

One of my favourite genres of comedy, this - the American concept of "socialism", and the suggestion that it exists in any way, shape or form in mainstream U.S. politics.

Or that it is in any way similar to communism.

It actually does exist, believe it or not, in the form of a man, the senator from Vermont, Bernie Sanders. He doesn't represent a Socialist Party as it were, he runs as an "Independent"....but he is a self-declared socialist.
