blandy Posted December 9, 2011 Moderator Share Posted December 9, 2011 Ian Macmillan (the Barnsley poet) chose it as one of his DIDs, and his explanation why was superb.
mjmooney Posted December 9, 2011 VT Supporter Share Posted December 9, 2011 Pogues & Kirsty, John & Yoko, Slade, Wizzard, Elton John, Springsteen, Greg Lake (same reasons as Tony) - all good. Also a few good versions of Chuck Berry's "Run, Run Rudolf" - Keith Richards, Dave Edmunds and Brinsley Schwarz. I do like The Eagles' "Please Come Home For Christmas" and B. B. King's version of "Merry Christmas Baby". For entire albums, Phil Spector rules, and I'm also a big fan of the Jethro Tull Xmas album and The Roches "We Three Kings". Otherwise, it's carols and Handel's Messiah.

Designer1 Posted December 9, 2011 VT Supporter Share Posted December 9, 2011 When I was a little lad, my dad had a Mike Harding album that would get played every Sunday morning. The A Side was some of Mike Harding's comedy routines (quite funny to a 7/8 year old) but the B Side consisted of his songs. This was always the standout track for me and has stayed with me ever since. It's quite a beautiful song imo.

maqroll
I just asked the three women at work that sit near me what their favourite christmas song was. They all said Mariah Carey's 'All I want for Christmas'. I got annoyed and told them they did't know what they're talking about and they're not talking to me now I'm sure this thread has been done before on Christmas's past but I couldn't find it. So what's you favourite Christmas song? It's got to be Slade for me LOL @ the work thing

Risso
"Driving Home For Christmas" Chris Rea. Some tasty chords in this number. That's my favourite as well, just love the sentiments of it. I love Slade as well though, "look to the future now, it's only just begun." Wise words.

mjmooney Posted December 10, 2011 VT Supporter Share Posted December 10, 2011 Re: Chris Rea. I prefer "The Joys of Christmas". I see all the tough guys still not 25 Dying on their feet Coughing, honking, cadging cigarettes And still out on the street Well, they got no money, nowhere to go Fathers of 2, 3 maybe 4, what are they gonna do Jimmy got a busted mouth in a fight last night He says he's OK Going down to the workies club (that's a laugh) To buy something strong and take the pain away Joys of Christmas Joys of Christmas Northern style Flashing Christmas light of police blue Go spinning down the street Women try to drag the men from pubs Into the stores And work hands in empty pockets deep We stand outside the neon ice and wish ourselves the best He says he's OK, out of work and fighting Is all he's ever known And laughs and says I worry too much anyway Joys of Christmas Joys of Christmas Northern style Let's drink to the likes of Jim Before we all go insane And please don't ask me why It'll take too long to explain Joys of Christmas
