End of the Year - Albums of 2011

If You Take Blandy's...

Polly Harvey - Let England Shake

Half Man Half Biscuit - 90 Bisodol (Crimond)

Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges

The Antlers - Burst Apart

Kate Bush - 50 Words for Snow

King Creosote & Jon Hopkins - Diamond mine

Tom Waits - Bad as me

And Add...

Panda Bear - Tomboy

Wire - Red Barked Tree

then you have My Best Albums of 2011

But it's not been a "classic" year, IMO. The Fall, Elbow, Fleet Foxes, Jesca Hoop, Barn Owl (:)) and a few others have also released good stuff.

I'd disagree with the Fall, think the new album is ok at best but largely going through the motions, Agree with the rest except Jessica Hoop which I must investigate (obviously)

So my kinda Bubbling under as better than Ok but not quite there are

Paranormale Aktivitat - Zwischenwelt

Wy Lyf - Go Tell Fire to the Mountain

The Wild Swans - The Coldest WInter for a Hundred Years

Washed Out - Within and Without

The Veils - Troubles of the Brain

Thurston Moore - Demolished Thoughts

Tunnel Blanket - This Will Destroy You

Sonic Youth - Simon Werner a Disparu (Soundtrack)

Steve Mason & Dennis Bovell - Ghosts Outside

Moon Duo - Mazes

Mogwai - Earth Division EP

Magazine - Know Thyself

The Kills - Blood Pressures

Iron & Wine - Kiss Each Other Clean

Gruff Rhys - Hotel Shampoo

Ghostpoet - Peanut Butter Blues & Melancholy Jam

EMA - PAst Life Martyred Saints

The Dears - Degeneration Street

Cut Copy - Zonoscope

Cornershop - And the Double O Groove of..

BRAIDS - Native Speaker

Black Lips - Arabia Mountain

The Advisory Circle - As the Crow Flies

Best Gig I've seen was The Antlers, I think

Definitely anything that keeps me there and not arsed about the cost of a taxi from Manchester to Formby has to have been that good

Always enjoy these threads, and the 'Best Of' lists on various magazines and blogs. I always find some great stuff I've never even heard of.

For me it's been a decent year but certainly not a vintage. Lots and lots of solid 4/5 records but not as many standout albums as the last few years, especially last year which was fantastic.

Anyway, on more of an electronic tip, my top 10 (in no order) would be...

Nicolas Jaar - Space Is Only Noise

LV - Routes

Instra:mental - Resolution 653

With very honourable mentions to;

Machinedrum - Room(s)

They Live - Cancel Standard

Roly Porter - Aftertime

DJ Shadow - The Less You Know, The Better

Cosmin TRG - Simulat

Marcus Intalex - 21

Bon Iver - Bon Iver

The Weeknd - House of Balloons

Balam Acab - Wander/Wonder

and no doubt a few others I've forgotten.. Still haven't heard the new M83 album either, must get on that, anyone else?

No particular order, for me:

Laura Stevenson & the Cans - Sit Resist

Steven Wilson - Grace for Drowning

M83 - Hurry Up, We're Dreaming

Cynic - Carbon-Based Anatomy EP

Dir En Grey - Dum Spiro Spero

The Devin Townsend Project - Deconstruction & Ghost

Esoteric - Paragon of Dissonance

Beardfish - Mammoth

Fair to Midland - Anchors & Arrows

Mastodon - The Hunter

Myrath - Tales of the Sand

BADBADNOTGOOD - BBNG

Always enjoy these threads, and the 'Best Of' lists on various magazines and blogs. I always find some great stuff I've never even heard of.

Too true. You've reminded me of the Nicolas Jaar Album which was kinda interesting and would probably appear in my bubbling under section, told me that Death in Vegas actually had a new album out (Which I knew was coming out but forgot about) and reminded me that I haven't actually listened to the Zomby album more than once and it deserves more than that. There's also a few other things you've mentioned I may check out too

From other Posters, the Woods album sounds interesting as does the Brontide / Sans Souci one so I'll investigate those too

Arctic Monkeys - Suck It and See

Dangermouse & Daniele Luppi - Rome

Frankie & The Heartstrings - Hunger

The Streets - Computers and Blues

Noah & The Whale - Last Night on Earth

The Strokes - Angles

Emmy The Great - Virtue

Kanye West & Jay-Z - Watch The Throne

Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones

Others I've listened to a fair amount include Tyler The Creator, Lykke Li and The Vaccines.

And there's a lot of other stuff I need to listen to a few more times.

This made me laugh, as it's so very true. As posted by James Jackson Toth AKA Wooden Wand on Facebook:

Good news, magazines and other sinking ships! I've created a template for your inevitable 'top ten of 2011' lists! This means you'll have more time for accepting bribes from labels that are indie-in-name-only and cribbing factually dubious adjectives from All Music Guide. Yay! Here ya go:

1. Bon Iver

2. Fleet Foxes

3. Cults

4. token mainstream R&B or hip-hop record (so everyone knows you're "down")

5. Kurt Vile

6. Dawes

6. some techno sh*t Pitchfork reviewed

7. The Civil Wars

8. M83

9. token 'prestige' artist (most likely Tom Waits)

10. Did I mention Bon Iver?

I always feel I have a decent knowledge of music until I read these threads. It amazes me how people have heard of and remember so many artists, how they afford to buy all these albums (or find the time to download them) and then find time to not only listen to them, but listen to them enough to be able to put them in an a list of their favourites of the year.

I thinK I need to up my game, there's clearly a lot of good music I'm missing out on. I've only bought about 5 albums this year, most of which were made before I was born

You should definitely check the LV album if you haven't heard it, I know you like your Hyperdub type stuff.
