Having watched this battle, which was red in tooth and claw, and stretched the rules beyond what was reasonable, I could quite understand why a non-football fan might wonder why it produced such sentimentality from its victors. Under Big Jack and to a lesser extent McCarthy Ireland have always been good at attacking teams even if football not great.
