Watches

Risso

Recommended Posts

Only time I wear a watch is to the footy - it was a free one, with some cereal or something, [probably worth about a tenner at most) - just so I can see how long left to half time, or whatever. But it's donkey's years old and still going.

Wow, impressive knowledge Risso. Where was his workshop? On the Isle?

It is quite stunning when you see those automatics for the first time. Most have glass backs to let you see the movement. I think that Seamaster Chronometer keeps time for 3 days after you take it off. Great if there's one you wear to work and have different ones for weekend.

Yes, his workshop was in the grounds of his house in Ramsey, in the north of the Island.  A friend of mine is the estate agent who went out to value the house after he died, and the watches were all laid out on a work bench.  £9 million quids worth, and nearly the same value of cars in the garage.

Have you got that Omega by the way, I'd love something like that.

I must visit there sometime.

I've had an amazing year with my massive love of watches. It's 2 weeks to my birthday and I got a D&G watch for it, white face, brown leather strap. I've since given it to my brother for Christmas.

Next I bought myself my first expensive watch, a watch I'm now selling. A Gucci G Chrono in black, I'd just got a great job after 3 months unemployed after a years travelling around the world. So I treated myself to this.

My next watch and my first "real" watch, by real I mean actual watch maker. D&G and Gucci are not watch makers. Was a Tag Heuer Carrera Calibre 16 an automatic. I bought it from eBay having put in plenty of research I got one that was well used, 5 years old and had an after market strap. I got it for a bargain and went and bought a new official strap and sent the watch to be serviced and it came back looking like new.

I had that as my daily driver until 2 weeks ago when having continued my reading and research and trying on loads of watches I decided as circumstances had, I won a very large sum at Cheltenham races this year and so bought 2 dream watches.

That exact Omega seamaster I posted above and the watch on my wrist now the Rolex Milgauss GV.

Bit of a sucker when it comes to watches. I've got 3 at the moment but want to add a silver and white Cartier Calibre non chronograph if I can.

Here's the 3 so far - Breitling Galactic 41 in blue, the Hublot Vendome Classic Fusion and a silver and black Tag Link.

Have to say as much as I love the Breitling, the original leather strap broke after 18 months and cost about 150 quid to replace. The counts!!!

Blimey, must have been some win!

Hurricane Fly. My ATM horse, 13 wins from 14 bets. But it's been a long road to that tbh. Proper learning from mistakes, lots of time and effort and analysis. Been a good few recent years with horse racing.

But the important thing is that you buy a watch that you know will be worth about x amount down the line. For example, you can buy a Rolex and it'll likely increase in value as Rolex have been increasing prices well past inflation for years now and have no intention of stopping.

Also if you buy a 2nd hard watch at the right price you can be safe knowing that it wont lose much value for years. Omega's a hugely popular at the moment for example and they have had big price increases recent enough too.

I joined a watch forum which has a Sales Corner, that's where you can be safe to get a 2nd hand watch, in great condition at a very fair price. It was very hard to make the jump to fork over a lot of money for a watch. But I know there is money locked in to the watch itself.

I was waiting for someone to pop in and hijack the thread with the kind of thing peter posted above. Shame Villatalk is like this tbh.

Risso before the inevitable destruction of discussion on the subject of watches happens, let me just say I had big hump to get over before I actually got my first nice one, but it was worth it. You clearly enjoy watches so I suggest you get a 2nd hand one you like and work from there. I enjoyed putting a bit of tlc into the 2nd hand Tag I got getting it back to looking new.

My watch says Collezione on it. I guess that means somebody spent either £12 or £25 on it in M&S a few years back.

Need a watch, as I can't have a phone on me in work quite often.

Oh I say! Dreadfully sorry , chaps!  Of course I can see now that you point it out, that it was a civilised chat among finance chums, about how to spend that part of the bonus which didn't go to inflating house prices.

How dreadfully remiss of me to have ventured in to a discussion which was obviously not for the likes of me.  How embarrassing!  I can only apologise, and retreat forthwith.  I am most apologetic about intruding on this private discussion about how best to reflate the economy, for our collective benefit.

Any nixon watch because they are free for me. Cheapskate!!

I've always liked nixon watches but unfortunately they are pretty poorly built. I've had four so far and they've all died irretrievably just after the warranty expires. The only exception to this was my latest one which I'd only had three months before the minute hand fell off.

I've been interested in watches since I earned £2.00 an hour as a sales assistant in H Samuel.  The story of George W Daniels who I mention above fascinates me.  He had a poor, violent upbringing, but went on to become the most important watchmaker in 250 years, and he lived round the corner from me.  I'm sorry if this offends your socialist sensibilities, but not everything in life needs to be utilitarian and merely functional.  You should probably get yourself over to the BMW Z4 thread as well, there are people there discussing cars that do more than just get them from A to B and it clearly needs your well meaning intervention to set them on the right path.

Possibly. ;)

I always said I wouldn't buy a watch until I could afford a top end piece. But I do find myself looking at few (particularly Mondaines) and am slowly convincing myself to treat myself before the season kicks off at work...

I'll feel the betrayal of my lefty principles with every noticeable gram on my wrist, though.

I spent a long time working at improving my betting on horse racing for 10 years and finally discipline, hard work and experience lead to me becoming successful. I had unwavering faith in Hurricane Fly and said to myself if he reclaimed his Champion Hurdle crown I'd use some of the winnings to buy a real nice watch. Something finally I actually wanted that was expensive having never had any real interest in anything of any value in the past. He indeed won, so I had that licence to go ahead and buy. It's a silly way to have got to the point, but it would only have been a matter of time before I bought a real nice one. It all started with just a present, but I really like watches, all watches and can see myself buying and selling various pieces of all kinds of value.

How much it costs isn't as important as how much you like it.

Gosh, I posted a picture of my watches in a thread called 'Watches'....what was I thinking, lol?

I've long been an admirer of nice watches but have only been able to consider buying in the last 3 years or so, as the business in Dubai has grown. Not sure quite what that has to do with 'inflating house prices' or 'how best to reflate the economy', but I don't feel anyone should need to apolgise for what they own, or posting it in a relevant thread on VT.

FWIW, for many years my most treasured watch was a Pulsar Spoon - thought it was the nuts when it came out

I don't like watches.

But even I'm on the side of Risso and co here.

People spend more on watches that just tell the time. It's the same with everything. I spend more on clothes than I need to to just cover my body for decency and warmth.

I spend more on a car than I need to even though it just gets me from A to B

I spent more on my house than I needed to just provide me with a basic amount of shelter.

Jewellery, fashion, technology, food etc etc etc

People spend more on some things that they can afford or have a passion for. That's life.
