Watches

Oh I say! Dreadfully sorry , chaps!  Of course I can see now that you point it out, that it was a civilised chat among finance chums, about how to spend that part of the bonus which didn't go to inflating house prices.

How dreadfully remiss of me to have ventured in to a discussion which was obviously not for the likes of me.  How embarrassing!  I can only apologise, and retreat forthwith.  I am most apologetic about intruding on this private discussion about how best to reflate the economy, for our collective benefit.

I've been interested in watches since I earned £2.00 an hour as a sales assistant in H Samuel.  The story of George W Daniels who I mention above fascinates me.  He had a poor, violent upbringing, but went on to become the most important watchmaker in 250 years, and he lived round the corner from me.  I'm sorry if this offends your socialist sensibilities, but not everything in life needs to be utilitarian and merely functional.  You should probably get yourself over to the BMW Z4 thread as well, there are people there discussing cars that do more than just get them from A to B and it clearly needs your well meaning intervention to set them on the right path.

Haven't you rather missed the point of the post for which Peter was castigated (and also forgotten your opening line of the thread - 'I think you can tell a lot about a chap by the kind of timepiece he wears')? Edited by snowychap

When do people wear these expensive watches? I ask this because I'd be paranoid of getting mugged. On several occasions I've noticed chav types checking out my phone after it has started ringing. Luckily my phone is crap and not worth robbing. One of them actually said 'shit phone mate'  :)

You should have said "I got it from your Mom"

Would have completely calmed the situation. Chavs love any reference to their Mothers.

I should've told him a yo momma joke, such as:

Yo momma's so dumb, she stuck the phone up her ass and thought she was makin' a booty call.

It's a good question, but insurance for a watch is advisable if it's expensive. People insure their phones, so if there is a worry about anything like a mugging etc.. happening then get insurance.

I'm moving to new apartment and it has a safe in it which is an unexpected bonus. I'm sure that'll chop off some cost for insurance.

As for wearing them, I wouldn't buy them just to keep. I've 3 different looking watches and will wear them at different times.

Still it's good to know if I ever needed the money for a house or wedding etc.. down the line I could sell them. But while I have them I'll wear them, I really enjoy them,

Looking at some of the feminine watches some of you wear in this thread I think you need to man up

I'm a massive fan of this tasty number

$(KGrHqV,!qUFCzc9cBhzBQ-TdMj+Lw~~60_35.J

Wouldn't wear one in the summer though can get kind of sticky

Nah seriously

The watch i currently own is a TW-Steel Wristband Watch CEO TWCE1032

At 50mm its a bit on the big side

And I'm scared to wear it around brum at night incase i get a knife in the back and it torn from my wrist

Terra Cielo Mare (means earth,sky,sea).

The owner of the brand is the former italian distributor of IWC watches, who decided to enter into the market with his own line in 2001.

they use Swiss movements but have no real heritage so opinions on them are divided. Personally I'd stick with Swiss brands unless it has strong heritage like Panerai, Seiko, Hamilton etc..

But that's a personal opinion. If you like a watch then it's you who wears it. They are well made, so I wouldn't put you off.

Love it. It's durable, it's waterproof (been scuba diving in it), it's accurate, it's got a stopwatch, an alarm and a backlight, and importantly the date, because I always forget the date.

EDIT: just realised I posted this a few pages (and years) back...oops.

Just bought me one of these about 20 minutes ago.  I'm in the 'I think watches are cool, but I just couldn't spend all that money on one' camp.  This is the first time I've had a watch in about 8 years too, just got used to not having one after the last one broke and I couldn't be arsed to fix it.

But yeah, £9.99 for an F-91W is all I want/need.  It's the choice of bomb-makers! :thumb:

An interesting discussion. I love watches, but the most expensive one that I ever bought for myself was list price here £500, and I beat the sales assistant down to the equivalent of £315, so a bargain in my eyes. My father offered me his 'vintage' Omega, but I told him that I didn't like it, and that he should give it to someone else. His retort was that I could sell it for good money.

I had an interesting conversation with an old friend last year, someone who is the most unassuming, unflash person that I know, and who doesn't plead poverty but doesn't like people to think that he is well off. He 'collects' a watch make called Patek Philippe, and has a few in a special case that i guess is the watch equivalent of a humidor.

He is a real enthusiast, and having never heard of the brand I pressed him further. The example he gave was that Rolex make round 1 million watches a year, while Patek Philippe make around forty thousand. As far as I know, he never wears any of them.

As someone has pointed out, people will routinely spend several hundred pounds on technology, so a long lasting timepiece, even one costing several thousand, is probably better value for money.

Patek Phillipe make some beautiful watches, normally very plain and tasteful in appearance. In terms of price, they average PP would be far more expensive than the average Rolex, and I believe they made the most expensive watch ever sold too.

Your friend's collection will undoubtedly be worth an awful lot of money.

Patek are super high end watches. Very expensive indeed.

As for the Monaco, I prefer the classic Steve McQueen with the blue face over the one above.

I know the one Connor and it's a beaut too, just I have two blue watches already so would love the white one.
