Gym Routine

I've decided to take up swimming again after many a year, it's been so long I have no idea the best place to go as a sensible, non dive bombing adult in Birmingham. Eg, big pool to get the lengths in and quite quiet in the evening.

Any recommendations?

3 weeks in now and still going strong. The only day where my motivation is lacking is cardio day. **** me it's boring.

I've lost no weight though, despite the fact I've been sticking to my diet 100% apart from one cheat meal a week (although I'll have a blow out this week after the playoff first leg)

I feel like I'm losing some fat though, so hopefully I'm just adding a bit of muscle through muscle memory that I'd lost over the past year. My lifts are certainly going up pretty quickly considering I'm not bulking.
Unfortunately my scales at home that measure bodyfat seem to have gone haywire. The weight works but it says I'm 34% bodyfat which is definitely wrong! So hard to tell.

7 weeks in now and still going strong!

The only thing I've wavered on is the cardio day. But I've started playing football with work once a week recently so that's effectively replaced the cardio day.

My body shape is definitely changing, despite not having lost much weight (I think I've lost 3-4 pounds in this 7 weeks) so I'm confident I'm adding some muscle too.

The only negative is I do feel quite tired during the day. The early morning plus a gym session is defintely effecting me. But the fact I'm dieting at the same time won't be helping that either.

3 weeks to go until my holiday so I'll keep hitting it hard until then. Then I'll have a nice 2 week recovery and see where I'm at.

Like running, time to get a routine.

At about 90kg and 6ft I don't know but guessing I'd be an ecto-mesomorph.

Never been a gym-rat or even a lifter, although I used a barbell daily for some months and put on some size a few years ago.

And more recently had a routine where I would do bodyweight 100 calf raises, 100 squats, 100 reverse crunches, 100 (variant of different ab workouts), 100 dips, 100 pushups in two sets of 50 reps daily.

Thinking of trying Aerial Alert for my vertical. Probably just some basic movements like squats, military press, deadlifts chest press with a barbell to begin with, as well as the same bodyweight exercises as before.

If anyone has some exercises for the barbell they strongly recommend (bar dropping it on myself) then I'd be keen to know. I struggle with the form for bent over rows otherwise they'd be in there too.

not sure if weight loss / dieting gets thrown in here too?

I tried golden milk (warm milk, turmeric, black pepper*, ginger) wasnt really my thing, couldnt get the balance right, I've moved on to loose leaf green tea ginger paste and juice of half a lemon, every night before bed, normal gym routine (2x crossfit sessions** and 1x football) regular diet (keto diet, chicken, eggs, hot sauce)

i was 12 stone bang on Monday night, this morning I'm 11st 7, i dont think i've ever lost weight that fast and between crossfit and the keto diet i've lost just under 3 stone in a year

* if you add turmeric to your diet (which is apparently really good for you) add black pepper too, thanks to some crazy science i dont understand it increases the absorption by 1000% or something daft, ginger + turmeric i think is meant to aid muscle soreness after a work out

** i go to invicta in kidderminster, really good crossfit gym, basically imagine 5/6 of you per session with a PT, stops the boredom thats for sure

Clothes! You can look clean cut from head to toe for about $100 if you shop smart.

Good on you for taking care of your health, that's invaluable.

Holiday was great thanks!

But haven't been able to motivate myself to get properly back in the gym since I got back. Been a few times but not like I was before.

Booking a lads holiday to Vegas soon so that will be the motivation to get back on it.

Toning IS weight loss.

Turns out I have a slipped disc. Doctor recommends rest and caution, not to aggrievate it, yet try to keep active.

Does anyone have any experience with it?

What excersises are «safe» to do? I certainly won’t do squats or deadlifts, but is bench press fine? Is rowing ok? What about running?

I love the Bruce Lee look. Not only aesthetically but which martial artists of note do you see looking like Serge Nubret? None really.

When I was training in Muay Thai and Arakan some of my instructors spoke of having to slim down in order to become more adept and progress as a fighter.

You lost me at 'miles' but I'll assume you have a good taste in fashion.

Not sure I understand what you mean when you say 'hard thing now is plateauing', that comes in every aspect of life though. I read a martial arts book once called 'mastery', the emphasis from start to finish is learning to be at peace with plateauing, as it takes up most time in the process of mastery, progress and regression are more ephemeral.

Lastly, I think you can hope for and achieve whatever you put your mind to. Look up Serge Nubret's body at age 70.

Back when I was skinny, I followed some training advice for ectomorphs, and within 1-2 months people were commenting 'you must work out'. The training was pretty intense and the recommendation for ectomorphs was daily, it wasn't fun, but I'd testify to the results. I wasn't even dieting particularly well, something you seem to have up your sleeve.

Not sure how sensible it is to do compound lifts with a slipped disc, you're not a professional athlete so thinking about your long term health should be the aim of the game. As a result you really ought to consult with a physio or any other relevant specialist.

From my POV, the bench press requires a significant back arch, can't see how this is sensible with a slipped disc, with rowing, assuming you mean the compound lift, again this is a back exercise which requires you to bend over (assuming you don't mean cable rows) so I cannot see how this is sensible with a slipped disc.

i thought you were meant to do something with it because it heals quicker than just being sat in bed

but at the same time i think you're meant to stretchy stuff like yoga and pilates, back flexibility exercises so also stuff like back extensions, supermans and then some core stuff, i might be wrong here but avoid anything where your back will be the fixator

swimming is the best aerobic exercise for it or get on some brisk walks

This is what I'd have more in mind rather than compound lifts but then getting this advice from a professional is absolutely the way to go.

Thanks. I actually meant the rowing machine. Barbell rows are absolutely out of the question.

I’ll have to get myself to a physio.

So for the past week and a bit I've been doing the "Clean 9" diet from Forever Living.

Yeah, I know, it's a **** scam and a pyramid scheme. That's what I said.

But my gf was absolutely set on doing it. She's really down about her weight at the moment (she's not fat at all, but she's heavier than she used to be) so being the bloody good BF that I am, I said i'd do it with her.

Anyway yesterday was the last day and I was pleasantly surprised to weigh myself this morning and find I'd lost 12 (TWELVE) pounds!

Now I'm under no illusions. This diet is basically starvation, with shakes and nutrients in there to make sure you don't die. The first two days the only thing you have that even resembles food is one milkshake. Everything else is tablets and supplements.
So I'm fully expecting some weight to go straight back on once I start eating normally again.
But I'm doing a "normal" diet from now until xmas so I'm hoping some of it will stay off and I can use it as a kickstart. And you know what, **** it, I'm pretty chuffed with that result.

I also feel much better. I've had a recurring headache for a while and that's gone. And I've slept much better the past week. I put this down to having absolutely zero caffeine in this time.
I feel so much better that it's prompted me to go decaff on my hot drinks. And just have less in general.

So yeah. Scam? Probably. Overpriced? Definitely. Pyramid scheme? Absolutely.

But **** it. Today I feel good.

If it has worked for you mate then that is the bottom line. As you say these kind of diets can be a means to kick start a more long term weight loss plan and as that is what you are doing I am sure you won't now put weight back on and will continue to lose just at a slower rate.

How did your missus get on and how much exercise was involved whilst on the 9 day programme?

She "only" lost 7 pounds. But it is that time of the month for her so I would expect a couple more will drop off when that finishes.

Almost zero exercise. I didn't go to the gym at all last week. The calories were so low on this that I didn't want to risk wearing myself out. I did go Monday and Tuesday of this week though, but only lifting weights. I didn't do any cardio.

I wasn't perfect on the diet either. I almost was. but I did go out with work on Friday and have 5 or 6 gin and tonics. Which isn't bad calorie wise but you're not meant to have any alcohol or caffeine.

Like I always say with fad diets, I think this was just basically a very low calorie diet, disguised as some pseudo science mumbo jumbo. But certainly in the immediate short term it seems to have worked.
I'll weigh myself again on Saturday to see if any weight has immediately gone back on.
