Soooo Attack on Titan season 3 has began.  Will have to give that a watch tonight.

Also I've decided to take the plunge and delve into the Berserk manga.

  Reveal hidden contents

I'm actually glad I have seen the anime first as the manga gives you the heads up that Griffith is the antagonist.  I know the manga's way of telling the story is to plant the seed then see how it ends up that way, but I preferred the pure jolt of it all being revealed during the eclipse.

Also....Donovan!  ?

Been watching attack on Titan half way through season one. It’s abit of a weird programme

Started Seven Deadly Sins instead. It’s ok, although the main character groping women is odd

Not watched much anime then?!

I have not no. But I do realise that is second nature, obviously just not a “western” thing to see

What made you want to give Bleach and Seven Deadly Sins a go?

The molesting stuff is definitely a trope of many anime, but fortunately, there are a lot of good series that don't get in to all that. A cultural thing I guess, it's supposed to be funny of course...

Boredom really. I’d downloaded an app during this lockdown, it conspired it was a game based on Bleach. I hadn’t heard of it so, read up a little and the concept sounded intriguing so thought would watch it. As for Seven deadly sins, because I couldn’t find Bleach, I looked up some that were on Netflix and again the concept seemed decent

If you're limited to Netflix, have a look at Attack on Titan (season 1) and Death Note - I think both are still on there. They're good stories, generally avoid those stupid anime tropes, and have decent dubs. And then if you really want to jump in at the deep end, give Neon Genesis Evangelion a go...less said about the Netflix dub the better, but maybe as a first time watcher it'll be passable...

It seems to prevailent in a lot of anime that characters have superpowers, often involving  fighting contests. Anyone know the origin of these? Is it meant to have some historical connection or just something that is liked?

The Monkey God carried Ruyi Jingu Bang, a magic staff.

The Buddhist equivalent of the 10 Commandments has a priest journeying West from China to pick up scriptures.

The novelised version 'Journey To The West', which is hundreds of years old itself, has the land covered in nefarious magic and demons. The Buddha reigns in the mischievous and destructive Monkey God to escort the priest through these hazards. It's one of the great Asian stories, still popular in China and Japan. There's lots of battles with magic combatants and weapons. So yeah, magic fights are a longstanding part of the culture over there.

Chose this example as the 70s Japanese series 'Monkey' was exported here too, and we loved it. Still do judging by the IMDB rating :)

My childhood right there 😀 chatting to my mum a few years back she reminisced about sitting down with me and my bro in front of the old black and white rental tv and that was her favourite not least because they all had good moral teachings but because we would be so excited and going mental pretending to be monkey, or flying on the cloud or whatever.

Watching it back of course it's misogynistic, violent, borderline rapey in parts. But yeah monkey.

Still have the BBC 7" soundtrack with Gandara on the b side.

Bloody love monkey.

Yup, tons of anime throughout the years have paid homage to (or outright nicked elements of) Journey to the West.

Dragonball (the time set before DBZ in particular) is one of the most obvious ones, as this photo of young Goku shows:

YoungGoku.jpg.09eae810f6a690aa591d1688361496b4.jpg

In fact, the name 'Son Goku' is the Japanese version of 'Sun Wukong', the original (Chinese) name of the protagonist of Journey to the West who is also known as the Monkey King. Little Goku here also has a monkey tail, magic staff and rides on a cloud -- all taken from his Journey to the West namesake.

Naruto is another anime that contains a number of references to Journey to the West. Like DB, Naruto also has a character named Son Goku who is a large monkey demon, as well as the Monkey King, Enma who turns into a magical staff that Sarutobi-sensei ('saru' being the Japanese for 'monkey') fights with.

A lot of anime borrow from old Japanese folklore, so you'll quite often see different interpretations of the same things. For instance, the initial 'big bad' of Naruto is the Kyubii (literally: nine-tailed fox) a popular demon from Japanese mythology. Pokemon fans out there will be familiar with this as there is literally a Pokemon called Ninetails, who is a fox.

FWIW, I'm a sucker for tournament arcs, which as @mikeyp102 mentioned earlier is a staple of Shonen anime. Shonen is arguably the most popular genre of manga and anime as its target audience is young males. In fact shonen/shounen actually means boy in Japanese. Bleach, mentioned earlier, is essentially tournament arc after tournament arc, though they were basically a series of 1v1 fights throughout with a very loose story woven between them, which got a bit stale after a couple of seasons.

Naruto's Chuunin Exam arc is probably my favourite tournament arc to date, though it always annoys me that tournaments in anime almost NEVER FINISH. The overarching story gets in the way, bad guys interrupt and so winners are rarely decided.

Anyway, I'm babbling now. As you were.

I started watching re zero.  So far I am really into it.

I also gave sword art another try and made it to the most recent season before the virus stopped it. Sword art is entertaining but some of the earlier seasons have some major duds.

I watched Gantz:O the other night.

It's err... Yeah. It's a thing.

People are brought back from the dead to take part in a game set by a mysterious black ball. They are given a suit that gives them supernatural strength and resilience, and are set the task of destroying hordes of monsters attacking Japanese cities. Each kill gets the player a number of points, the harder the monster the higher the score. Winning the game gives you a prize - a choice. Upgrade your equipment for the next game, revive a fallen teammate, or freedom from the game.

It's basically an excuse for extremely pretty extremely over the top violence. It's a CGI movie and very well done, it looks incredible. But in the main it's basically 2 hours of action. It's surprisingly enjoyable, if you can see the appeal of a giant creature being killed by having it's head teleported slice by slice away from it's body.

The Gantz series was one of my favourites. I read the manga too, which expands on the story significantly, and answers some of the questions the anime didn't - most importantly, what Gantz is - but I actually preferred the anime series for being a self contained story with that particular mystery never being solved. Plus, it got a bit much when almost every player was being revived, and the ending wasn't great.

There's some live action movies too. They're not as good as the CGI one as far as I recall.

Dragonball z for me is the best anime series ever. It dragged but kept you hooked. Has there been a better fight than goku vs frieza?

Now there's a question... I'll have to have a think about this 😛

Obviously Goku vs. Frieza is legendary due to the first time we see Super Saiyan, but crikey does that fight drag... on (pun fully intended).

In terms of seeing how far the animation used in anime has come, this one blew up the internet when it aired a couple of years ago. Most of you have probably seen it, but for those who haven't this is grown up Naruto & Sasuke vs. Momoshiki from Boruto.

It obviously helps if you know Naruto and are familiar with the characters and just how jutsu (techniques) in the Naruto universe works, but if not I'm sure one can appreciate the animation:

Recently finished watching...

Serial Experiments Lain, was confused as to what was actually going on but liked the overall look and feel of it...

Paranoia Agent, I think this could be describe as a sort of psychological drama, I enjoyed it a great deal and thought it was very creative

A Place Further Than The Universe, this one is more of a straight story than the other two about four girls who have ambitions of joining an exhibition that's going to Antarctica, doesn't sound all that exciting but I thought it was a very well done feel good coming of age series.

Have also started watching one called Penguindrum.

Started watching Sword Art Online about a week ago. Mainly due to me being a fan of dothack years ago, not sure why it's taken me so long to jump in.

Well, it's great. It rattles along at an incredible pace, and the story arcs are emotive, engaging, and it doesn't play up to the whole 'stuck in an MMO' concept often.

I've just started the second arc (S1E15), and this is where things get really interesting. After S1E14 the first arc is definitely ended in the anime. You could stop watching there and be really satisfied - but after this point they made not just a spin off story based on the episode 14 not ending the way it did, but a whole series of games based on it. This is generally referred to as the 'gamerverse', and the 5th or 6th (depending on what you count) game of that series was released just this week.

Recommended.
