Things you often Wonder

How long things like easter will carry on for in to the future. With fewer people going to church, does it just carry on anyway with fewer people knowing what it is? I'd love to know if you asked the population what it was, the figures youd get back.

If it goes away will we all lose our 2 days off work?

There's your answer ;)

Whitsun still happens, I would guess not many people know what it's actually for though (I don't...) they just know its something religious so we get a day off

Circa 60% of the UK identify as being Christians (2011 census). Although down from 71% from the 2001 census. We will carry on celebrating Easter as long as we are described as an official Christian country.

And as long as supermarkets are full of chocolate eggs and I have to make **** hot cross buns from January I doubt anyone will forget about it.  The actual religious side of it is becoming increasingly irrelevant to most people (which is a positive thing really).

I think you are making the mistake of thinking that Easter has something to do with "church".

I suggest a little Googling 😆

I wonder how the pigeons are getting on for food now that there are a LOT LESS people around, to feed them or drop stuff.

Around my way they’re beginning to form strategic alliances with the crows, in preparation for dawn raids on allotments and supermarkets. They’ve been seen flying in formation much like the Luftwaffe, readying themselves for the big attack. They won’t admit it of course, when they see you coming they stand down and drop into ‘generic street pigeon’ mode, so as not to attract attention. But it’s coming...

I still remember the religious side of it. Jesus rising and then handing out chocolate eggs with a giant bunny rabbit around Bethlehem, Jerusalem and time permitting, Nazareth

#neverforget

Holidays in the western world are a complete mish-mash of nonsense. Like Christmas is this one thing, with Jesus being born and three wise men and a woman who's never had sex giving birth, but then it's also this complete other thing with a fat man in a red suit delivering presents and reindeer and snow and mistletoe. And as you note, Easter makes if anything even less sense.

I had never really given any particular thought to what an incoherent mess it all is until I began teaching in Asia, and found myself having to try to explain this to rooms of Korean and Vietnamese children, and really, where do you even start?

Burn them all down and start again IMO.

I suspect they are expiring and are being eaten by the rats.  Question is what are the rats going to eat once pigeon is off the menu?

I have a good view of the train station car park from my window. During normal times it is packed by 7:30am. The last couple of weeks its been interesting hows its reduced. Its generally about 7 or 8 cars now, which includes the people who work there.

Sadly there has been one car that hasn't moved for nearly 2 weeks. You start to think why and then fear the worst. The owner could be ill in hospital or even worse :(

At Hall Green Station someone is using the car park for long term storage of vehicles. I wouldn't be suprised if someone is using them all over the city.

I've complained but everyone passes it on to someone else and no one claims responsibility for the car parking.

So based on that we are about 50% now in 2020, or will very soon be at 50% or below. They're not going to get rid of easter any time soon, surely?

Of course not. It has become accepted custom and practice to have a number scheduled holidays per year. The religious origin is irrelevant for most people, and may one day be almost completely forgotten, it'll just be another 'bank holiday' (there's another anachronistic term). Just like many consider May 1st to be a socialist workers-of-the-world-unite day. You don't have to subscribe to that political philosophy to enjoy a day off.

On celebrating Easter, school's seem very reticent these days to do an actual show telling the proper Jesus stories at Easter and the Christmas Nativity.

However one year my daughters infant school did the full Easter story.

There were some really young kids from pre school sitting at the front of the choir.

2 Roman soldiers put Jesus in the cave (some chairs with a blanket over them)

When they come back one shouts "Where is Jesus, he's gone?"

This little kid at the front of the choir stands up points and shouts out "He's just crawled over there!"

The crowd went wild.

When our elder daughter was at primary school (aged about 6 or 7), she made us an Easter card. She'd painted a very graphic Jesus nailed to a cross, with lots of dripping blood, and the words "HAPPY IT'S SPING!"

I think we may still have it somewhere.

We need to see this 😂

  • 2 weeks later...

Where do ice cream vans fit in the lockdown?

Theres one that’s tootling up my street every single day. Surely that can’t be considered essential or is he claiming he can’t work from home?
