Dogs are hard work and you shouldn't get one if you dont have the time to walk it every day at least, never mind all the other stuff.

So many lazy dog owners who dont socialise or bring up dogs properly, its very annoying. The dog then gets thrown out 'its the dogs fault' ITS NEVER THE DOGS FAULT at all. A dog is trained, if you fail to train it and it does something its your fault.

Cats are selfish and easy, if you cannot be arsed get a cat.

I started a thread about getting a dog a few months back, I was trying to convince myself that I could do it but I came on here pretty much so everyone would tell me I wouldn't be able to cope with one.

I have to make do with my dog that is at me mom n dads and me neighbours dog.

I think if I had to award a 'best overall' dog award taking everything into account, it's hard to surpass the Border Collie. They're not my absolute favourite but they are basically flawless.

Labs rule, that's why they're trusted to be guide/helper/sniffer dogs. Plus some of them are bonkers (ours is anyway)

Simples.

Though I may have contradicted myself there............ :D

Aside from their inclination, like all sheepdogs, to chase cars. Flawless maybe, but not when you're picking them off the side of the road :(

As a pet I don't think you can beat staffies but I love Japanese Akitas

I couldn't disagree and agree more with your post :D

Love Akitas. Absolutely love them. I think they're too big and hard to look after for me to every get one, but they're one of my favourites.

However, if you listed all breeds of dog in order of how much I'd like to have one, you'd be hard pushed to find any breeds below staffy.

My uncle ran over his own border collie :(

Just ran under the back wheels.

The only type of dog that I have ever had has been a staffie, playfull really bad people full of energy great personalities and great with kids. I know you get idiots who call them tyson and walk around with them as if they are a trophy dog and that pisses me off big time.

As for Akitas, I used to know a bloke who bred them and showed them in crufts, when I used to play football down the park he would have to call me over to give the youngest a fuss because as soon as he saw me he would lie down and refuse to move till I ran over to him and he would leap up and go potty, it was really strange, never seen a dog do it before.

Anyway's the bloke showed me the pups that they had just had and I was **** amazed, he didn't have a back garden he just had an absolutely huge cage for them must have cost an absolute fortune to keep them (I think he had 4 when he died but his nephew's pretty much looked after them all the time then)

They will be more selfish if you cannot be arsed to spend time with them, though.

They respond to social interaction as much as dogs, and you both have a nicer owner/pet experience.

If you can't be arsed get fish.

Akitas would be much too big for your average family and they're not particularly good with children (in part owing to their size). Not to mention the medical problems. A relative of mine used to have a few of them for show. One died from a twisted stomach, fairly common by all accounts. They're nice to look at but much too much work as a pet from what I could gather.

As for Staffies. Lovely dogs but I'll take his uglier relative, the English bull terrier. Basically a clown in a dog suit.

My missus is pretty desperate to get a Beagle one day, but we already have 2 cats and I'm afraid that owning another animal would make us part of the animal people. I don't want to be part of this group, nor do i really want a dog. Might have to placate her with chocolate and shiny stuff.

Beagles are also one of those dogs that aren't great to take for walks if you let it off the lead (as I understand).

Because they're bred to hunt and follow scents and stuff like that they have a tendency to just **** off at the first opportunity and not stop until they find whatever it is they've smelled.

Like Huskies. I was this close to getting a Husky before common sense got the better of me when I moved into my house. But one of the things with them is because they're bred to run and run and run, i fyou let them off the lead they could very well just run off and not stop for ages.

So yeah, I love BEagles too, btu they might not be the best option.
