omariqy
IMO a proper leader to unite the Arab world/Muslim world to stop all the in-fighting, tribal warfare, treat minorities fairly, stamp out extremism, get rid of the Saud family as leaders and to not be puppets to US foreign policy. Chances of that happening.....
Awol
IMO a proper leader to unite the Arab world/Muslim world to stop all the in-fighting, tribal warfare, treat minorities fairly, stamp out extremism, get rid of the Saud family as leaders and to not be puppets to US foreign policy. Chances of that happening..... I think a chap from Iraq is trying quite hard to take up that role as we speak... As for Saudis being US puppets, you've got that one the wrong way round. However, the Saudis dropping bombs on Yemen while unopposed in the air is one thing. If they go in to Houthi controlled territory on the ground then they will get an unqualified thumping. Yes the US has sold them lots of nice shiny kit, but as the Yemenis say their soldiers are "women with beards". I can say from personal experience that the average Yemeni tribesman is like a Glaswegian on steroids, but with a lifetime's shooting practice gained on a two way firing range. The blowback within the Kingdom following a proper military defeat in Yemen could be quite serious for the fathers of Salafist terrorism. Grab the popcorn, this could get very interesting. OutByEaster? Posted March 30, 2015 Moderator Share Posted March 30, 2015 An independent secular democracy would save it. Obvious problem being they aren't much interested in allowing secular anything and we aren't too interested in allowing them democracy.

HanoiVillan
It will indeed. It feels like it'll never end right now, but Islamic conservatism is a political fashion just like any other. Just forty years ago you could see things like this in (urban) Afghanistan or Iran: Things change. By the time the Middle East is less **** up, we won't even really have time to appreciate it because we'll be losing our shit over whatever the current fashionable disaster of the day is.

CarewsEyebrowDesigner
'Oh yeah you live in a dry, hot climate? Well, just be sure to wrap up and keep from distracting us men from getting on with stuff.' If people choose to dress 'modestly', then fine; the problem is in too many countries they aren't given the choice. omariqy
That's not the principle behind dressing modestly. Men also have to dress modestly FYI.
CarewsEyebrowDesigner
I was being a little facetious with that remark. Anyway, most cultures had or still have 'modest' dress codes, unofficial or otherwise. It's always about sex.
omariqy
No agree a lot of it comes down to sex/temptation etc but that's not all of the reasoning behind it. Edited April 1, 2015 by omariqy
Wainy316
I wonder why sex was chosen so early on to be so demonised.
Marka Ragnos Posted April 1, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted April 1, 2015 I wonder why sex was chosen so early on to be so demonised. Demonised -- or sanctified? I think it's hard to tell the difference. It all smells the same. "The lust of the goat is the bounty of God."
Xela
You see a lot of photos of Kabul, Baghdad, Tehran, Cairo, etc in the 1970's and people dressed a lot more like the West. When did it change?

chrisp65
You see a lot of photos of Kabul, Baghdad, Tehran, Cairo, etc in the 1970's and people dressed a lot more like the West. When did it change? From memory: The Shah of Iran was your typical arab despot, squandering his country's oil wealth on his own family and palaces. Backed heavily by the U.S. that wanted to make sure more of the world was capitalist than communist. The model wasn't sustainable - a 'western' model imposed by military bullies. This meant an educated elite that wanted real liberal western values and an oppressed majority that saw the elite overlords taking the piss. The only organised opposition was the established religion. Once the U.S. decided it wasn't prepared to put boots on the ground to prop up their Shah his days were numbered. If you want to know why any other part of the world turned to shit, just change the three words I put in bold with the relevant title from Nicaragua, Chile, El Salvador.......
