Steelers (+2½) over Packers Over 44½

The Steelers took their first big step out of the modern-day shadows when they took Louisiana Tech's Terry Bradshaw with the first pick in the 1970 draft after winning a coin toss with the Bears for the privilege.

Superlative scouting work of the black colleges -- years ahead of the pack -- yielded the bulk of the talent which produced four Super Bowl championships in six seasons, culminating in the Super XIV win over the Rams featuring a roster composed entirely of players whose only NFL league-game experience had been with the Steelers.

It's a competitive league, and subsequently, cycles of success featured the 49ers, Cowboys and Patriots. But coinciding with the coming of Ben Roethlisberger, the Steelers have returned to the front ranks. And given the sustained superb personnel judgment displayed by the Packers -- highlighted by the now-obvious decision to send Brett Favre packing in favor of Aaron Rodgers -- Green Bay has justifiable ambitions of its own.

The bull case for Green Bay is well documented. Gleeful Packer-backers are anticipating early deployment of four or more wide receivers, which in addition to minimizing the considerable defensive talents of Steelers nose tackle Casey Hampton, will compel Pittsburgh to deploy nickel and dime packages including the likes of defensive backs William Gay and Anthony Madison, who figure to have their hands full against such speedsters as Greg Jennings, James Jones and Jordy Nelson.

But the fundamental things still apply. The regular-season stats don't lie, and the Steelers averages of 120.3 rushing yards per game on offense while allowing but 62.8 stack up favorably against Green Bay's 100.4 and 114.9.

We also relish the gross mismatch at tight end. It's the Packers tough luck that Jermichael Finley's season-ending injury leaves Pittsburgh with the advantage of a healthy Heath Miller vs. Green Bay's Andrew Quarless. And the Steelers' Mike Wallace, Emmanuel Sanders, and Mr. Knowhow, Hines Ward, will provide Roethlisberger plenty of target practice.

We haven't even touched on experience and logistics. Charles Woodson and Ryan Pickett are the only Packers who have endured this pressure cooker. The Steelers are infinitely more seasoned, and Roethlisberger's win in Super Bowl XL was thanks largely to his teammates -- and Seattle's newbie status.

The highest-profile exceptions to the power of the Super experience advantage are easily explained. The opportunistic Saints defense was too much for Peyton Manning on the big stage, and the mentally exhausted Patriots were vulnerable to the Giants in a quick-revenge setting.

The Packers are coming off three road postseason wins -- and now are favored. The only other team to sweep in that scenario was the Steelers, who blew through Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Denver before stumbling past Seattle as 4½-point favorites in Supe XL -- an uninspiring game most notable in many minds for the marked percentage of officiating decisions favoring Pittsburgh.

On the most recent occasion these two hooked up for real, the Steelers won 37-36 last season at the Ketchup Bottle -- with Troy Polamalu missing for Pittsburgh. Don't anticipate as many as

73 points will be scored tonight, but expect the Packers to force tempo, and as the butterflies dissipate and the quarterbacks get used to the constant flow of new footballs in the first half. Once the scoring starts, expect the fast and the furious.

We most recently hit with the Cardinals (plus points) and the Over, and the Saints and the Under, in this space. The Cardinals weren't wildly popular, and we had little company using last year's combination, so I am used to following the data rather than the crowd. Barring inopportune injuries, Steelers are unlikely to play dead, and 44½ is a relatively low total for a Super Bowl boasting such offensive talent. There's no tomorrow, and desperation reigns.

This figures very close, and since Maurkice Pouncey and Aaron Smith aren't playing for Pittsburgh, every half-point counts, and since the public loves the Packers, +3 should be widely available by kickoff, as it already is in the offshore market. In the end, it should be . . . Steelers, 27-24.

Anyone else looking forward to the BEP at HT? I'm hoping we get a Janet Jackson moment from Fergie Ferg!

Hope the silicone holds up, because the face is sagging alarmingly ;-)
