Anybody who has been on the Chants thread in the past few days would have noticed talk of trying to find/create a club Anthem for before games/ getting to teams workrate up etc (much like You'll Never Walk Alone at Liverpool etc)

Not a much better time than now given our situation to have such an anthem, yet we dont seem to have one other than mindless chanting about how Blues should be listening.

So, theres been a suggestion of:

To the tune of:

An old cowboy went riding out one dark and windy day

Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way

When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw

A-plowing through the ragged sky and up the cloudy draw

Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel

Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel

A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky

For he saw the Villains coming hard and he heard their mournful cry

Yippie yi Ohhhhh

Yippie yi yaaaaay

Holte Enders in the sky

Any thoughts?

Or other ideas for an anthem. Or thoughts on an Anthem in general?

Here are the lyrics to the entire song:

An old cowboy went riding out one dark and windy day

Upon a ridge he rested as he went along his way

When all at once a mighty herd of red eyed cows he saw

A-plowing through the ragged sky and up the cloudy draw

Their brands were still on fire and their hooves were made of steel

Their horns were black and shiny and their hot breath he could feel

A bolt of fear went through him as they thundered through the sky

For he saw the Riders coming hard and he heard their mournful cry

Yippie yi Ohhhhh

Yippie yi yaaaaay

Ghost Riders in the sky

Their faces gaunt, their eyes were blurred, their shirts all soaked with sweat

He's riding hard to catch that herd, but he ain't caught 'em yet

'Cause they've got to ride forever on that range up in the sky

On horses snorting fire

As they ride on hear their cry

As the riders loped on by him he heard one call his name

If you want to save your soul from Hell a-riding on our range

Then cowboy change your ways today or with us you will ride

Trying to catch the Devil's herd, across these endless skies

Yippie yi Ohhhhh

Yippie yi Yaaaaay

Ghost Riders in the sky

Ghost Riders in the sky

Ghost Riders in the sky

Would the whole song be sung or just the first verse? The first verse is definitely the best one in my opinion, as many of you would agree, but I thought I might as well post the whole song so people can have a look.

I've always been a big fan of The Bells are Ringing and have never understood why it is hardly ever sung at home games. I know it may not be considered very cutting edge by the younger generation but you have to remember YNWA is from one of the campest musicals of all time.

I think that whatever song chosen the club should record a version with the Villa words in and play it over the PA pre game...like they used to do with Dwight Yorke Dwight Yorke.

Is it only me that thinks the Yaaaay and ooohhhh are the wrong way round? Or have I confused myself?

Yeah definitely the wrong way around!

Just to get my say in, we have to keeps the lyrics as they are! Apart from swapping holtenders and ghostriders of course.

Can't imagine liverpool or west ham changing lyrics to of their anthems to in include their rivals...

"an you'll never walk again, once we've **** u up,

**** u up, **** u up...."

I like this section the most (the lyrics sound more profound and could easily be referring to our players/fans whose "hooves were made of steel" and instilled a bolt of fear in people.. etc etc)

But I haven't heard the song for ages and can't listen to it while I'm at work

Copying Liverpool with a plastic "anthem" is not our style IMO. :|

I don't think it's plastic or copying Liverpool (they've just obviously the easiest example to give).

If it gets the crowd pumping before a game and gets the majority of the crowd singing along, then it can only be a plus.

I don't see how it can be labelled as plastic, at all.

Some games this year, it seems like people have wanted to sing.. but we're all too deflated to get it going constantly (it could be due to the performances.. but still). If we actually had an "anthem" that was played before the game and people started singing along, it could improve the atmosphere of the whole game and get more of the crowd chanting during the game.

Ive been talking to some guys at work about this at work,

Why are Plop allowed to sing walk alone while the players are lined up? Fair enough anything goes before the teams come out etc, but why does the opposite team have to stand and listen to that crap at attention before every game? Are there any other clubs that do this?

I'm not sure if this is the best thread I've ever read or the worst.

The intentions are all good, I hope, but guys - the song already exists...

As I walked out at Villa Park one dark and dusty day,

I spied a poor blues fan as he was running far away,

I said to that poor city fan it looks like you might die,

Cos You have seen the Glory of Holte Enders in the sky

Yippee eye aye, Yippee eye oooh, Holte Enders in the sky,

We chased him through the terraces, we chased him out the gate,

Little did he know that death was soon to be his fate,

He only had one hour to live and then he’d hear the cry

That every city fan does fear, Holte Enders in the sky,

Yippee eye aye, Yippee eye oooh, Holte Enders in the sky,

Their fists where just like granite and their pockets full of lead,

And when they catch a city fan, you know he’ll end up dead

Cos Villa fans rule Birmingham and city fans know why,

They’ve all heard and they’ve all seen Holte Enders in the sky,

Yippee eye aye, Yippee eye oooh, Holte Enders in the sky,

So you see its already there for those who know, which is maybe less than I thought looking at this thread.

Its a bit 70's hooligan stylee granted, but I'm sure someone with more time on their hands could make it a bit more PC and non-violence related so that everyone can use it as the Anthem as you rightly suggest.
