Saw this on Reddit earlier:

Those are sales figures for an unnamed indie game. Something interesting came up in the thread which accompanied this picture:

10% sale = 35% increase in sales (real dollars, not units shipped)

25% sale = 245% increase in sales

50% sale = 320% increase in sales

75% sale = 1470% increase in sales

That is Gabe saying how sales tend to affect sales, if you get me. You make more money (in a short burst at least) if you discount your product by 75% than if you only ever sell it at full price (sauce) and Valve have the figures to prove this happens time and again. I guess Gabe was right, digital distribution is the future. Valve arent really doing anything Apple havent already done with iTunes, and that is the now undeniable fact that if you make something easy to use and decent value for money then people will use it. Yeah, you can torrent a game or an album, but there are millions and millions of people out there who cant be arsed to bother with all the risks that come from illegal downloads and they are more than happy to buy the product. There are people out there who used to illegally download stuff and because services like Steam (and again, iTunes) are so well designed and easy to use they just switch to downloading legal stuff too. At a time when lots of old media fuckheads are trying to lock down the internet with

it is important to see people making new media succeed.
