thetrees
Just as a bit of context. Man City played a virtual full strength team in Romania and scraped a 1-0 win. Liverpool played a near full-strength team against Trabzonspoor at Anfield and scraped a 1-0 win. We fielded a reserve team with only two players you would expect to see in a full strength villa team and came away with 1-1 draw. I think it's a fantastic result. Next week we will undoubtedly have a bit more quality in the team and I would think it will be more than enough to progress. Spot on sir , i am reading the wank fest about liverpool winning and Man City winning , its like hold on a sec they were playing there full strength teams and only just scraped wins . We've made 8 changes and managed a 1-1 at one of the most hostile stadiums were ever likely to play at . Well done lads you did what was asked of you and we cant ask for anymore than that . Actually BBC breakfast news stated: 'Liverpool fielded a second string' 'Aston Villa had a few first teamers missing' Confused the hell out of me!! AndyHowell
Interesting game with the youngsters. Guzan — really didn't make me feel confident at all Lichaj — OK and no more Davies — looked poor to me, was pulled all over the place and bad in the air. Not sure he has a future with us now. Beye — better than Davies considering he doesn't play much Hogg — workman like Reo Coker — works hard, terrible touch on the bal, gave ball away too much (as normal really) Bannon — everywhere first half, knackered by second, but good performance Albrighton — caused them a lot of problems. 4Serious
I thought the result was as fantastic as the general performance was poor. Really never expected to escape with a draw after their goal went in. Our defending was poor, our passing was shocking, we had passengers in midfield (Hogg, Downing) and our set pieces at both ends were dire. It's what you would expect with such a chopped and changed team. I thought our pressing was decent though - NRC was good without the ball (terrible with it though). However, Rapid were a shadow of the side we played last year. They were awful. I think they were affected by their striker effing off. Even their fans were nothing as loud as I remember them. A better team would have taken us to the cleaners. Still, football is all about the result. And our young lads brought a great one home, while picking up massive experience. So a great day, all things considered. And you can tell a lad like Bannan 'work hard and you'll get a place' all day, and it'll mean nothing - it's just words. For him to score his first senior competitive goal... it's priceless. He'll feel involved now, a real part of Aston Villa. As bad as they played, Lichaj and Hogg will feel the same. The fact that we managed to get them out there and survive a ropey showing is awesome. And in 6 months time, who knows, maybe one or two of these raw youngsters will be playing at Albrighton's level. If we beat Newcastle with Dunne, Petrov and Young fresh and ready to go, and then get through this tie at Villa Park that's really a super start to the season. Keep it up Kev Mac. chappy
bit of a dull game and we didnt do much BUT we got the away goal which is what is important. a very professional job from our second string. ITV4 had crap coverage. the RV fans seemed to be absolute rocket polishers...especially throwing stuff at Weimann when he was being carried off. Nobody really stood out for me, though Albrighton had another good game. I missed the bloody goal cos the first pub i went to watch it in werent showing it so had to go to a different one, got there just after we scored. moose
The atmosphere in the ground was quite something else. There were enough coppers guarding the away end to give every Villa fan a personal escort back to their hotel! Match was pretty sloppy, but the result is what counts and it's a vital away goal, just got to be solid at the back in the second leg and the youngsters have won themselves 6 matches. AVFC-Prideofbrum
I didn't think Reo-Coker was terrible but nor did I think he had a good game. I'd say the biggest problem was though the fact his role he had to play was completly different. When he got the ball, well whenever anyone got the ball really, there was a complete lack of options. Hogg barely wanted the ball, completly out of Depth so Reo-Coker had to constantly pick up the ball from deep which isn't exactly his game. He's good at winning it and releasing the ball and showed that many times throughout the night, he also gave the ball away too much, some through a couple bad passes but mostly through lack of options. Far, far better when he as someone like Petrov alongside him who makes himself available for the ball, as he will be when Ireland plays too as he will constantly have easy options available to him. Ads
Amazing couple of days. Absolutely top draw stuff and probably the pick of the recent trips. Never a dull moment.
slovenian
just came back from vienna, macdonald picked an interesting team, but the result wont raise our profile in europe 11th minute guzan made no friends in vienna Ref from Luxemburg was shocking, some rapid fans are scum, guzan was constantly abused, they even stole a villa flag, turned it upside down and sang scheisse aston villa (beyond a healthy dose of banter). they named villa fans villians and our manager martin k. macdonald in their match programme
