Lost all faith in Rafa Benitez on this one. Ciaran Clark is abysmal, I hope he never plays or breaks his leg in the first training session. I've really sensed some desperation now in Rafa's targets now. Diame was so-so & this now Clark just takes the biscuit. awful ' Newcastle forum It won't be his own leg that he breaks so be careful what you wish for guys! I was wondering why the deal hadn't been done yet then heard his medical was around midday and he had to go for a 2 mile run. He should be back any minute now to sign his contract.

PompeyVillan
I have to say, despite my earlier misgivings about timing and our squad strength, I'm now quite pleased with this. I've concluded there is never a bad time to get rid of a weak link. I've convinced myself in the past that he may be useful in this league, but as has been pointed out by several posters, we've been waiting 6 seasons for him to come good and develop into the player we had hoped. It's not happened. £5 million is a good fee for him in all reality. I do worry that our scouting system is so poor we'll have to rely on RDM alone to come up with a better replacement though. I'm hoping this goes through now.

I think just about everyone would have kept Clark ahead of the first two, but ultimately it seems he wants to go for whatever reason. I'm just relieved that he won't be in our starting line up.
omariqy
We do need a centre back pretty badly. Wouldn't be that keen on McNair tbh.
Pilchard
Even better than selling this twerp....the reaction of Newcastle fans is really odd. They are acting as we are all up in arms at the release fee being met. We aren't. I haven't seen one angry Villa fan. In fact most including myself are delighted. They will get a shock when they see the worst defender from last year's worst defence actually play! Edited August 3, 2016 by Pilchard
PompeyVillan
I too find it amusing that some at Newcastle believe this them asserting their dominance. He's nowhere near one of our better players.
Popular Post lapal_fan
Think people are being a bit harsh myself. I quite liked Clark. He came from the academy with high expectations, and he never quite reached those, although he did have Man Utd sniffing around when he was younger. I see him as someone who is pretty good, but he can/does cost your team about 3-5 goals from his direct mistakes a season. If you have good attacking players then you can probably forgive him of this, but last year, we didn't and it looks like we haven't forgiven him. He definitely went through spells of playing very well, until his next goal conceding blunder. I liked his very stiff tackles, he never backed out from 50/50s and he is good in the air. He's cost us nothing and played well for the most part of his career here. He seems to like the club (which is more than can be said for some) and it'll be strange seeing him in another teams colours. Good luck Ciaran, you gave it your best shot, got to play at Wembley a couple of times, scored a few important goals in your time and been generally a decent player.

Jareth Posted August 3, 2016 VT Supporter Share Posted August 3, 2016 Shame for Clark, he is leaving the same time as we are possibly signing ScoreMack, nobody will notice as he puts his coat on and exits.

Firstly they revel in the fact they're signing him. Then when they see our borderline delirious reaction to getting shot, they almost universally respond with 'yeah well he won't start, he'll be 4th choice'. So you're delighted to have him but you don't want him near your side? All that's left from that is the fact they're delighted that they're nicking him from us. The problem is so are we
NIVillan
He could have been a great player for us but unfortunate his learning was during out worst years for defenders. If he could have say played alongside a McGrath or a Laurson I think he would have developed into a Good Solid Player. Ugo was able to learn histrade alongside McGrath/ Teale and Barry alongside McGrath and Southgate. Makes a big difference. Our Academy does a good job of developing and producing promising players. What Villa have been bad at is integrating these players and developing them into First Team regulars. BUT 5 million will go along way for paying for our Academy and we can hope we do better next time
TrentVilla Posted August 3, 2016 Moderator Share Posted August 3, 2016 I just don't get why people make excuses for his failings or inability to learn from mistakes. A better player alongside him may have hidden the mistakes a little or reduced the impact of them but they would still be there.
