And just to clarify it was RAFA The fat chef, who won the Champions League for Liverpool! Heard constantly it was Houlliers side, well if we finish or win a cup do we praise MON as this is his team! Also why is it going to 4 to 5 days to complete talk about being slow!

Was it Ron Saunders team or Tony Barton's that won the European Cup for Villa?? :/

Last time I checked Alonso and Garcia were signed by Rafa!

The club are between a rock and a hard place whoever they appoint.

None of the available candidates are likely to have thousands flocking down to VP to welcome them. Who wouldn't prefer a Jol or Moyes but the timing of MON'S resignation really ballsed up the options available to us.

If it is GH/Kmac or wherever (but preferably not Curbs) then they deserve to be given a chance and judged on results. Some of the whining on the past few pages is laughable.

I don't think it is.

Who villa appoint could be the difference between us reaching the champions league or getting relegated. It's a massive decision for Randy and co and we, as villa fans, want to see the best candidate appointed.

If people think that Houllier or KMac are the wrong people for the job they are well within their rights to be concerned.

Yeah who Villa aka Randy appoint, what has he done so far to warrant the abuse he is getting from some? MON came because Randy was here so he did ok with that, he did ok supporting MON and improving the club the best he could; what has he done so wrong?

We cannot just go out and force other employers to release their best managers can we.

I'm not jumping for joy about Houllier but he has a fairly decent record and is the best of a bad bunch imo.

How about giving the bloke a chance if he is indeed appointed and focus the frustration at the previous manager who conveniently left us in the shit at a key time.

Gerard Houllier favourite for Aston Villa job after talks

Sep 3 2010

GERARD Houllier has emerged as the frontrunner to become Villa’s new boss – after Randy Lerner met with all of the contenders for the Villa Park vacancy.

The Frenchman, who turns 63 today, is believed to have come across as the outstanding candidate following the claret and blue board’s week of interviews.

Houllier, who won the UEFA Cup, FA Cup and League Cup treble with Liverpool in 2001, has not worked in the Premier League since he left Anfield by mutual consent on May 2004.

But he has the reputation and gravitas that the Villa top brass believe will keep Villa upwardly mobile following Martin O’Neill’s untimely resignation three-and-a-half weeks ago.

Houllier also boasts a CV which includes winning the French league with Paris Saint Germain in the mid-eighties and twice in successive seasons in his last job in club management with Lyon in 2006-07.

He has since been employed as France’s technical director.

He fits Villa’s primary criterion of having managed in the Premier League during his six-year spell with the Merseyside giants.

His work on the developmental side of French football also ticks a box with Villa hoping to improve their policy of bringing through homegrown talent to the first team.

In 1988, Houllier took up a role at France’s National Technical Training Centre and the following year he was appointed Director for National Technical Direction.

He spent 10 years overhauling French football at various levels, playing a part in France winning the UEFA European U-18 Championship in 1996 and being credited for his contribution to their 1998 World Cup triumph on home soil.

Houllier is believed to have given Villa assurances that a return to the English top flight will not lead to the health problems he suffered during his time at Liverpool.

Lerner and his trusted lieutenant, chief executive Paul Faulkner, concluded the interview stage by talking to the final two candidates yesterday.

Although, Villa’s top brass already have clear idea of the frontrunner to succeed O’Neill, they will take the weekend to mull over the final decision.

There were suggestions the successful candidate could be unveiled as early as today, but there is now likely to be an announcement on Monday.

Speculation has raged about the identity of the would-be managers on Villa’s shortlist all week with Kevin MacDonald and Alan Curbishley two of the other known interviewees.

Meanwhile, one of the new manager’s first tasks should be to overhaul the club’s sub standard scouting system, according to ex-boss Graham Taylor.

O’Neill’s untimely departure also affected Villa’s transfer with chief scout Ian Storey-Moore following the former manager out of Villa Park.

“When I was on the board at Villa I asked the then manager, John Gregory, what he wanted, and how I could help,” said Taylor. “He said that Villa needed a better worldwide scouting system and I set about putting that in place for him.

“However, when I left it was not carried on. It’s the big area that is letting down Villa.

“I know Ian Storey-Moore, who was chief scout under O’Neill, and how the club operated.

“Villa did not take many players from abroad, it was mainly an English-based squad. That has to change. MacDonald and the board must never again be wide open to five senior members of the football staff leaving when the manager goes. It has wiped them out.”

I don't see this as a problem, we couldn't get our number 1 choice because he is currently employed....So we're giving Kevin a chance with Houllier the DOF roll.....He will know what young French stars are worth bringing to the club....Atleast Arsene Wenger will not be the only person raiding the French market for new stars.

If it don't work all that well with Kevin at the helm then we just try again next year for the man we wanted or someone else.

I just want this all out of the way now....Some will moan because this could have been done ages ago and we could have bought in some new players....I myself think we should have bought some in as cover, but it's not the end of the world.

He bought a lot of shit but still made them competitive won cups and got them to the point just behind the big boys, they needed someone to take that final step, which wasn't Rafa!

Reminds me of a certain ex Villa manager (except winning cups).

Another hat thrown into the ring!!!

Skysports.com understands former Italy coach Roberto Donadoni has applied for the Aston Villa manager's job.

Donadoni is keen to try his luck in England and he has expressed an interest in succeeding Martin O'Neill at Villa Park.

The 46-year-old, who led Italy to the quarter-finals of Euro 2008, has been out of work since leaving Napoli last October.

Aston Villa are currently conducting interviews as they seek a replacement for O'Neill and former AC Milan star Donadoni has thrown his hat into the ring for the position.

Donadoni's UK representative, Charles Collymore, has confirmed the Italian has applied for the post and is interested in working in England.

Interest

"Roberto is a great student of the English game and he is very interested in the job at Aston Villa," Collymore told skysports.com.

"He knows Villa are a top club with an ambitious owner and he feels he could be a success there.

"Roberto has worked at the highest level and he has always dreamed of coaching in England.

"Roberto has the experience and talent to help develop the best young English talent and also the knowledge to help find the best foreign talent available."

SSN

I quite like Donadoni (and he looks like Wayne Coyle from the Flaming Lips!) great player too

Absolutely nothing but good things IMO. However Jez, there are some at B6 who see through the glass darkly if they can see at all and all they see is shrouded with negativity. Some say it's a Brummie thing. I just think that Prozac should be prescribed more often when the GP's find out that they are Villa fans !

Failing that a full frontal lobotomy would seem appropriate, that way the rest of us could avoid having to bang our heads against the wall when we read the vitriolic drivel that some dream up.

None of the names are particularly inspiring to me but i am suprised by the negative (hatred almost?) towards Houllier

I agree. Criticising his transfer record is one thing, but what has Houiller done to deserve epithets such as “that French clearing in the woods”?

To me he always comes across as a decent and intelligent bloke, and someone who commands respect. I remember him speaking to Steven Gerrard on a TV link-up after a Champions League match a year or two ago. This was several years after Houiller left Liverpool, but Gerrard still greeted him with “hello boss” and a shy smile. He looked like a little boy on his best behaviour in front of the headmaster.

If Houiller comes to Villa, I really don’t know if it will be a successful move or not. But I think he would at least deserve to be given a chance and some respect.

Long time lurker here but just wanted to throw this in...

Donadoni previously managed Livorno, twice, who are based in... Tuscani, exactly where Randy's jet went to earlier in the week (if i remember rightly). :)

If you don't already, you should write for the Daily Mirror. You'd make a fortune.

Watch the odds on Donadoni drop like a stone now.
