could we not be seeing

Friedel/Guzan

Beye Carlos Curtis Warnock

Albrighton NRC Sidwell Downing

Delf/Weimann Heskey

Doesnt look like a week side at all to me. We all called for rotation under MON now we moan about it.

Carlos and Sidwell aren't in the squad

Its

Brad Friedel, Brad Guzan, Elliott Parish, Eric Lichaj, Stephen Warnock, Ciaran Clark, Curtis Davies, Nathan Baker, Isaiah Osbourne, Habib Beye, Nigel Reo-Coker, Barry Bannan, Stewart Downing, Marc Albrighton, James Collins Jnr, Nathan Delfouneso, Shane Lowry, Emile Heskey, Jonathan Hogg, Andreas Weimann

O Neill was slated for doing similar things to this, can't believe Carew,Luke Young, Petrov, were all left at home especially when we were so short with injuries already.

The youngesters area year older and year wiser. I think you will see a stronger team in the home leg.

I also can see NRC leading us to another cup win.

This is a weak squad, i not so sure about McDonald anymore. I think these players won't be enough and won't be about to select a team that's works from the players available.

So players missing are: L.Young, Dunne, A.Young, Carew, Sidwell, Petrov. Inj. Cuellar, Collins, Agbonlahor. Ireland missed squad deadline.

Some people were suggesting that Bannan will play in central midfield with Reo-Coker. I hope not.

Captain Stiliyan Petrov, Ashley Young and Luke Young have not travelled while Carlos Cuellar, Steve Sidwell, John Carew and Gabby Agbonlahor are sidelined.

I honestly hope he does so we can see what possible future he has. We are not going to see that if we don't play them.

I didn't write not play him at all.

I think playing him in a two man central midfield with Reo-Coker will be a mistake.

I'm even gonna bother answering the other one.

Resting four players after only one competitive match and with so many players out injured or suspended??

This suggests that we are once again not taking this competition seriously.

We're not. K Mac says it's important we can get into the group stages so that we can get the youngsters some experience.

Disappointing stuff.

It doesn't make sense to me. We seem to discard the Europa, make it our lowest priority, to ensure that we achieve our aim in the premier league - to finish in the european places. Just so we can chuck it away the following season.

I am looking forward to watching this team playing tonight. I don't have the negative or concerned outlook that some previous posters have revealed.

I think that at some stage we have to trust that someone with K-Mac's coaching experience at B6 since 1994 knows what he is doing.

Those of you that recall the Moscow trip two seasons ago will perhaps remember that the youngsters were two years younger back then and accredited themselves well.

As for formation we might be in for a surprise. Most of us will be expecting a 4-5-1 but have you considered what also a flexible 4-3-3 might look like using the same players?

................................... Guzan .............................

Beye........ Clark........................Davis ................ Warnock

...............Albrighton........ NRC ............... Downing

............ Fonz/Bannan .............Heskey................... Weimann

These youngsters are fast especially Bannan. Weimann is the future star of Austrian football and will be playing in front of the team he grew up supporting and will be very highly motivated. It should be an awesome night for him. I would bet that there will be a lot of support for him in the Vienna crowd

K-Mac has already indicated that Weimann is in form at this time. What better night to pick to give him a start ?

Those of you that recall our away game against Litex Lovech in Bulgaria will also recall that NRC has the abilty to play a blinder. I wouldn't worry about NRC, he is very willing to prove himself and get into the first team.

It makes good sense to rotate Stan and NRC, it will bring out the best of them. Having Heskey upfront and being able to lay off to either Weimann or the Fonz or both could very well prove to be a strategy to reckon with, if used.

Heskey also has the abiltiy to track back and help out the defence.

There's a lot of pace in this team along with a huge motivation to win.

The problem is that the Europa Lge is seen as more of an annoyance, it has little genuine exposure (just look at the channels it's broadcast on here, CH5, ITV4 etc), there isn't much in the way of highlights packages and the prize money is pretty poor, particularly when you might have to end up travelling right across Europe for a match. The games are also played on a Thursday which isn't ideal despite the subsequent PL matches being moved to Sundays.

We, as fans kick off about the fact that we don't take it seriously as a club but then what about this:

2008/2009:

Odense - 31,423

Hafnarfjordur - 25,415

Litex Lovech - 27,230

Ajax - 36,657

Zilina - 28,797

CSKA - 38,038

2009/10

Vienna - 22,563

Perhaps if we took it more seriously then the club would feel obliged to.

Still 4,500 short of capacity for the game against Moscow, yes they're Thursday night matches but you can't honestly tell me that there weren't at least another 4,500 Villa fans who could have made it but chose not to.

Probably the same people who now complain that we don't take it seriously enough.

Irregardless of the result this evening I fully expect another crowd of around 22,000 for the return game against Vienna....which is appalling really.

This it the line up in from that infamous night in moscow:

Guzan, Luke Young, Davies, Knight, Shorey, Albrighton, Gardner, Salifou, Sidwell, Bannan, Delfouneso

I think tonights might even have less 1st team players. Have to wait and see what 11 is announced.

Just on a nitpicking administrative point, am I the only one to be confused by this new Matchday thread structure? There is a very similar discussion going on in the "Match Thread" thread.

I don't really like the look of this squad but we have to trust that Kevin Mac knows what he is doing. If we are going to mount a successful Europa League campaign, as well as runs in the domestic cups, alongside a top 4 challenge, we will have to use the entire squad, so we will start to find out this evening if the squad is good enough to enable us to meet all those challenges.
