Barry Bannan

So, all those floated wasted balls straight to the keeper count as a success because they landed (with the keeper) but in the box.

Basically, his shit corners that never went to a Villa player top up his crossing %!!!!

^^^ Very important when looking at Con's argument!

No, an accurate cross has to connect with a Villa player.

You are remembering the 55% of Bannan's crosses that weren't accurate, and not appreciating the skill involved in getting 45% on target.

Beckham was playing for Man Utd with the best strikers in the league to finish off the crosses. No matter how hard you try to disparage Bannan's crossing statistic, it is a level playing field across the league. Bannan is the best at that.

His crossing % is topped up by corners.

His corners have not resulted in goals.

Corners hitting the box over the first man are counted as a success. Most of Bannan's are landing with the keeper (those floaters) and there-for are classed as a success and top up his crossing %

His crossing from "in field play" is far far far less.

Argument won. Goodnight.

Your argument is about his crossing from open play. His crossing from this is topped up by corners.

Your argument that a) he will help with possession - this fails because as shown, others keep the ball better, your argument that he crosses better (and should be in the team ahead of others to use this in open play) this fails because his crossing % is topped up by corners, which as we know has a) not resulted in a goal and B) does not support your argument for having him in the team.

The manager wants the best crosser to take the corner.

With Bannan playing in the centre most of the time, the most opportunity he has to cross is when he takes a corner.

That is true for most players other than fullbacks and wingers. Point is, N'Zogbia and Westwood's crossing from corners is not more accurate than Bannan's.  If it were their crossing accuracy would be somewhere near Bannan's, but they can't get close.

he adds nothing to open play,

Westwood has more assists from corners.

Bannan does not even have the best ball retention.

His crossing from open play is below average and on par with players like ireland.

We do not pick players for set pieces, but for the team. Bannan does not deserve to be above those currently playing.

And most of his were open play!!!!

He did not depend on corners (a lot taken by Giggs) to give him impressive crossing stats!

Barry Bannan (46.60%)

The Aston Villa midfielder has produced 48 successful crosses out of the 103 he has attempted, an incredible success rate just shy of 47%. In charge of Villa’s set-pieces, Bannanhas produced most of his crosses from the corner spot.

It's 52/114.

You know how Bannan got his assist? A cross from open play. If Bannan was on the left more often, rather than in the middle, he'd get in more crosses. Bannan on the left is something Lambert hasn't really tried.

These are a few weeks old and do not change the fact that most of his crosses are from corners. Nothing changes at all apart from you add a few more on.

He is adding nothing from open play, ball retention is less, long balls are more and he is less likely to assist a goal as shown by 0 all season. So he does not deserve to be on the team based on corners alone (which have also resulted in 0 assists)

If he comes in next week, or the week after and sets up goals, is positive and creates chances then my mind will change, but that is something he has had ALL SEASON to do and failed.

Pathetic today. 1-1 and Fulham dominated the possession statistics, in control 51% time - even though they were without Steve Sidwell and Enoh started his first PL match.

Our crossing was terrible. Westwood and N'Zogbia had crossing duties today - 13 crosses between them, only 2 accurate.

Bannan is accurate 45% time on crosses. Against QPR and Reading, we dominated possession with 56%, winning these must-win, winnable games.

Bad call from Lambert to not even include Bannan in the squad today.

"I thought they were the better team" - Martin Jol. Anyway...

Bannan's crosses, especially his corners, are hit while leaning back and hitting under the ball creating a loopy, shit, backspin, floating cross meaning it arrives in the box with nearly no velocity and spin that is facing back towards where it came from. The only reason 45% of these terrible crosses are counted as successful in your flawed statistics is because Benteke (who has won more aerial duels than anyone else in any of the top 5 European leagues) and Baker manage to get the first touch on the ball when it's put in 45% of the time. These aren't opportunities these two are having, they're just winning flick ons similar to what happens from clearances.

These crosses are a waste of **** time.

He's not deserving of that role at the moment whilst others are showing they can do it. Bannan has had his chances, been given time to show he can add to the team, he has failed and others are stepping up.

LMAO!!!!

Are you SERIOUSLY saying that it's not Bannan that is rubbish it is the rest of the Villa team?!?!?! Like, seriously???

We have one of the world's most on form strikers who is relishing balls into the box, who puts away chances with ease, and you are saying that it is because of him that Bannan looks rubbish?

Seriously mate, I think it's gone too far now. Someone locate Con's IP address... we need to send around the men in white coats.

Lambert hasn't tried Bannan on the left because Bannan isn't a winger. He isn't fast, he hasn't any skills, he hasn't any strength. His only hope in this world is that he can ping a ball 50 yards and he really isn't very good at that.

Villa are a better team without Bannan. It's plain for everyone to see.

Decent write up about crossing from open play: HERE

We've discussed this. Rickie Lambert has only 50 crosses yet tops the crossing chart with 35%, while Bannan has over 100 and 45% and is nowhere. Reason is Opta have a games played filter, and Bannan (18) is just under it.

Any manager in the game knows the real score.
