Why not give them to a mate, a neighbour, the shop keeper, the kids at the park, the people outside the ground (I assume he went). Announcing it on Twitter (and probably getting about 10,000 replies) seems like a strange way to go about it but up to him I guess. As you say, probably wanted to be seen to be doing a good deed.
