Very sad news that Tom Maynard of Surrey and England Lions got killed by a London Underground train during the night. Only 23 and would most likely have played for England at some stage. Last week he turned up for a day at the Sussex v Surrey game with two black eyes with it being blamed on getting hit by a car, though there were other rumours of nightclub incidents. Either way a sad loss.

Yeah, I echo this. An absolute tragedy. A young man who had a very bright future in the game.

RIP.

Seems a massive waste of talent. Police released a statement that they were following his car as he was driving erratically, he pulled over and ran off and then was found on the tracks. If what you're saying is true, sharky, then I guess this incident fits.

Either way, big loss to cricket, RIP

Only concurring with above comments; absolute tragedy. RIP

Wife and self were just commenting yesterday on the number of sons of famous fathers in cricket which you don't tend to get in football.

This was because Peter Willey's son was playing for Northants on the TV.

At the moment there is Jonnie Bairstow and of course Stuart Broad. I remember Tom Maynard's Dad, Matthew (of Glamorgan I think) playing for England.

All very sad.

The last time he will ever be run out i guess. Why was he running from the cops? He wouldn't be the first sportsman to be caught drunk driving/drug driving which would be my guess if he were driving "erratically" he should have just taken the punishment there was no need to pay for it with his life RIP.

Apparently he was already unconcious or dead on the track before he got hit, maybe through electrocution. I think it's safe to say he was clearly off the rails, if you pardon the expression, and was probably a tragic accident. His old man had a bit of a reputation too from what I recall. Great waste.

Mark Ramprakash announces his retirement

One of the best County cricket players of recent times , shame he never carried that form into his England career

53 average at County level, 27 average in tests. Just 2 hundreds in 52 tests. Says a lot.

met Mark R a good few years ago. I didn't know who he was, he didn't know whether I was in any way important (which obviously I wasn't) or key to the meeting. He was just a really nice bloke, gave me loads of time, talked eloquently about the training facilities at Lords which we were there to study (er, copy and claim a fee for as specialist designers), gave me contact details if I had anymore questions and went and got me a drink and then talked about non cricket stuff happily all evening. Just a totally grounded nice guy.

Ramps, Hick and Crawley (amongst others) were victims of the appalling "hire - and -fire" England selection policy during the '90's. OK, so he had 52 Tests, but he was always looking over his shoulder, as the next poor Test score would mean he was out of the side. Terrific player, and superbly talented. Have a great retirement, Ramps - no doubt we will see you in a commentary box somewhere, taking over from that dick-splash Mark Nicholas.

On another note, great to see Chris Tremlett on the comeback trail. Not sure that he will get back into the England side, but I hope that he does. He was one of the major reasons we destroyed the Aussies in The Ashes here.

Spot on there Jezza what has been wrong with him do you know ? We will need a full squad to take on South Africa and he is a damned good addition.

Supposed to be going to Warks this evening - not looking good at the mo' !

Veloman - Tremlett had a back injury that required some serious surgery - a bulging disc, I think. I'm in Melbourne in the middle of winter, but I reckon it's still warmer than back in my hometown!! Edgbaston looks like being a chilly place mate!!!

That was some performance from South Africa confirming them as the best team in the world in my eyes.

Hard to disagree. Totally out classed by the Saffers for 4 days. Makes me wonder what happened on Thursday night, to make them play so well, and us so shite?!
