ope at 5, Stokes at 6 (think that switch will happen once Pope has a few more games under his belt)

I'm not so sure. Given Stokes's improvement and assurance as a batter, I wouldn't be impressed with him dropping down the order.

Yep, the order is beginning to sort itself out finally, Denly, Root, Stokes, Pope is shaping up nicely and the openers aren't a disaster for the first time in a long time and Burns for Sibley makes it even stronger. Buttler, he's just not a test batsman, he is capable as he's shown but you just can't rely on any level of consistency, he's come in at some really opportune moments in the recent past and failed to capitalise. Great player but maybe just a one day specialist.

Thing is though, South Africa are pretty shite at the moment, winning any test match/series away from home is an achievement these days but there are much stronger opposition out there.

I think it depends upon how long the tail is and whether we can get to rely upon the middle order.

If Buttler is going to be the 'keeper then I don't think we should worry about how often he works and just enjoy the times that he does - though I think that also requires the management to effectively give him licence whatever the situation.

If it were up to me, though, I'd be having Foakes as 'keeper and batting at 7.

Yeah with the top order looking like it might be becoming reliable, I'd prefer Foakes at 7 too and let Buttler and Bairstow rip it up as world class short form players.

I think Graham Thorpe taking over as batting coach from Ramprakash helps.  I've noticed that batsmen seem to work on technical things between matches rather than just making the same mistakes over and over again.

Well done Dom Bess.

A big lead for England and South Africa in trouble - that can only mean one thing; England somehow conjuring a draw.

Wow what a thing to wake up to. 4 rapid wickets and follow on enforced. Come on!

what a gift from South Africa - their last 4 wickets for 1 run in 20 minutes. Bafflingly bad batting, but bugger it :thumb:

Follow on enforced

16-11-20-4 for Root, WTF?

Has Derek Underwood possessed him?

So 2-1 with 1 to play unless the weather god's decide otherwise.

Sheesh, just perusing over the scorecard.. If you thought England's batsmen were bad, South Africa look way worse, one 50 in 19 wickets.. (with Marahaj on 46 atm).  Sad times for them I guess.

Awful bowling for that 10th wicket but it’s a minor blemish on a great performance and result there.

Great result. Emphatic performance that was almost flawless. Helped by South Africa. I'd expect momentum to take us onwards to a 3 1 win now if weather holds.

Now then; faites vos jeux ! Will England drop Bess and bring Archer back in - if considered fit ?

South Africa have lost the plot. This is madness. Got England down to 318-9 and Broad and Wood now to 389/9 :D
