That’s the way for Buttler to play. Is he a test batsman? I’m not sure but we are picking two batsman keepers so may as well just drop Bairstow and have Buttler as the keeper

Interesting stat I read on the BBC yesterday:

Quote
  • Since his recall in May 2018, Jos Buttler has made more 50+ scores in than any England batsman in Tests and has a higher average (36.51) than anyone in the current side.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/49674525

I go back to the point that he’s had to bat the entire series in defensive mode, then when he gets out cheaply, it’s highlighted more than it probably should be.

Buttler would be worthy of a place as a wicketkeeper batsman at number 7 - not as a specialist batman. 1 century in 36 games isn't good enough.

Here comes the annoying century from Cheatybollocks.

I think he's fine as a specialist batsman as long as the openers play themselves in a bit. He will always have some howlers though as doesn’t have very much discipline in how he I’ll plays.

But more 50’s and a higher average than anybody else in past 18 months?

Should he be expected to score 100’s really? In an ideal world that shouldn’t be a requirement, he should be coming in and bashing a quick 50-75 and pushing the total up?

The fact 36 is the highest batting average over the last 18 months say more about England being poor than Buttler being good. Granted, we are short of options but 1 in 36 tests for a 'specialist' batsman is abysmal. He has passed 50 once in nine innings this summer. He averages 22 in this Ashes. A test batsman should be expected to score hundreds every now and again.

I'm not having a pop at Buttler, I love him as a one day player, but like Roy, he's not a test batsmen. He would sneak in as a wicketkeeper batsman at 7 though 🙂

Another half century for Smith.  As bad as we've been batting wise, we'd have won this series comfortably if without him.

6 down and he's still there.  Will just have to whittle through the tail as quick as possible and just have him unbeaten with them all out.

Only 80 from Smith? He must have needed a dump or something.

I was going to say, and if he hadn’t missed a game would their second best batsman Labuschane have even come in?

We are in a good position here, should be able to build a lead of about 200 for them to chase in their final innings!

Yes we’re in a good position now. Curran gives us another dimension and Archer back to his best.

Really good day bowling, shows why we all wanted Curran in earlier.

Side still needs a massive shake up after though.

Still what I don’t get is how bad Roy hs been. Yes we all know he’s not a test batsman. But even if he played his one day shots, you’d still expect him to get quick fire 50’s before getting out

Yes but but different opening the batting with  the red ball. Go all out attack straight away your likely to nick one, really you do need a decent defensive technique

I just think Jason Roy has a load of obvious technical deficiencies that aren't deal breakers in white ball cricket, but get exposed by the Test format.

Those weaknesses are all visible in his white ball game, but if he gets 30 off 12 balls in an ODI and then throws his wicket away, he's done his job. In Test cricket, that loose thick edge to fifth slip is a catch, in ODI it's a four or a harmless push to third man.

Buttler is the more interesting prospect, because he does have it in him to be a very good Test batsman. He might not particularly enjoy it, but he has a better all round game. His last two innings have been superb.

Strange but worked out for them maybe even for long term
