I don't understand why wrestling being scripted makes any difference to whether people enjoy it or not. Apparently Eastenders has a script and tens of millions watch it.
Yes, but Eastenders doesn't pretend to be about a physical contest between rivals, and there's more to it than a series of arm locks and hurlings-to-the-ground. Only slightly more entertaining all the same.

I'm just watching a female character on Eastenders holding a young lad up against the wall and yelling at him. Just as real.

WWE advertises itself as "sports entertainment". I don't think they're pretending its a sport.

But as you said earlier, there is a script. There is usually a back story behind each wrestler and each feud. It's essentially a long running action film and up until around 2003 I watched it religiously.

I'd rather watch some 6'4 oiled up bloke throw someone through a table than some jacked up prick from Leeds talking about whether a child is his or not.

They are both gay, but at least there is SOME pain in watching someone pretending to get nailed and it's definitely more of a spectacle.

forgot to add; Hot bitches.

There is absolutely no chance that Trish did porn! There's loads of fake "wrestling diva" porn videos. She turned down Playboy numerous times because she didn't want to do nude stuff. I remember years ago when I checked the clips that are meant to be Trish and it's blatantly obvious that it isn't her anyway!

Chyna on the otherhand... her clit is horrible and her tits look very oddly shaped. I don't rate her surgeon at all.

Back to WWE, I thought RAW was boring on Monday but seeing CM Punk with Paul Heyman is a storyline that I've wanted to see since last July. I'm intrigued to see where they go with it from here. Going three hours permanently was a mistake because they aren't developing enough storylines/feuds. It's as if they are stumbling along and struggling to fill an extra hour instead of giving some of the lesser names more tv time. I'm a huge WWE fan but there's only three or four active wrestlers that keep me interested. The rest of it is too boring and/or too immature for my liking.

Same usual argument.

Wrestling is a soap opera. All fans see it as that and enjoy it for that reason.

No-one thinks it's real.

As for the physical contest? Well when you watch a fight scene in a film or tv show do you think "Well this is clearly fake, so it's rubbish"

Have you ever seen Rocky? What's the difference?

It's a unique brand of entertainment, it's not for some people. I myself used to like it but I can't watch it anymore, just don't enjoy it these days.

but the old line that people spout "But it's fake so how can anyone enjoy it" always baffles me. Most entertainment on TV is fake. No-one watches 24, or The Wire or Eastenders or The Hills or whatever floats your boat and thinks it's real life.

Wrestling is just a Soap Opera that you can go and watch live and cheer at.

Some people do. Morons.

I think you'd struggle to find anyone who doesn't believe in Santa (i.e. is above the age of about 8) who thinks it's real.

And if you did I'd imagine it would be because there was something wrong with them.

What annoys me the most about when people say wrestling is fake is the pure ignorance of it! While it is all scripted and storyline based, the physical side is very dangerous. Some of the manoeuvres that they do are very high risk. One slip or bad timing can have life threatening consequences. Yes they are highly trained but accidents happen. Everytime they wrestle could well and truly be their last. These guys wrestle 5 or 6 nights every week. Their travel schedule is ridiculous! No off season in wrestling! Many of them often wrestle hurt too!

I'm 28. I've been a fan since 1987. When I was 22 I trained to be a professional wrestler. I went to America twice to attend training camps that lasted three months each time. I've actually had professional wrestling matches in America and England and my record stands at 19 wins and 5 losses. I was seriously considering trying to crack America permanently and then when I was 25 I got a serious ankle injury playing football which set me back for over a year in total. When I fully recovered I didn't really have the desire to get back in shape and start wrestling again. It was good while it lasted though. Massive eye opener!

People often say "why watch wrestling when it's fake when you can watch MMA which is real", well, MMA fights can be over with in under 30 seconds. I can shell out a fortune on a MMA PPV and the main event could be over in the blink of an eye, with WWE you know that the main events are going to go half an hour+, sure it's not real, but the show they put on can be pretty damn entertaining. Seeing some of the stuff you do often get the "holy shit" moments that make it all worth it.

Sadly though more often than not these days the "holy shit" moments are followed by WWE dropping the ball.

The matches are all about telling a story, it's kinda like a ballet really, the moves are meant to convey a story, and when matches come together right they can do that pretty awesomely. HHH vs Undertake at wrestlemania this year wasn't the greatest technical match, 2 guys who are past it was never going to be, but it told a story that made it a pretty awesome match.

At the moment I'm really enjoying the Kane and Daniel Bryan stuff (even though a couple of months ago Kane was about the most boring thing going) their anger management skits are awesome.

Poor old Jerry Lawlor had a stroke/heart attack while commentating on raw last night.

Gosh. And, dared I say it, but following on from the the above conversation - is it a work?

Here's a video if anyone wants to see it.

You can hear a snoring like noise at 0:13 seconds and you can see him slumped in his chair at 0:26 seconds.

There are other angles from the crowd which show him being taken away on the stretcher.

The Wwe website says he's stable right now. I hope he's alright. Grew up watching him wrestle then turn into a commentator with Jim Ross, best two commentators ever.
