Tired Gay succumbs to Dix in 200 meters

Oregon (Reuters) - Olympic bronze medalist Walter Dix edged out Tyson Gay in the former world champion's hotly-anticipated return to the 200 meters at the Prefontaine Classic Diamond League meeting on Saturday.

In the 110 meters hurdles, American David Oliver recorded the fourth fastest 110 meters hurdles of all time with a 12.90 second run.

Gay, who has been battling a nagging hamstring problem for seven weeks, ran his first 200 of the year in 19.76 seconds to finish just shy of Dix, who took control coming off the bend and stayed in front to win in 19.72.

"It wasn't bad, but I was a little fatigued toward the end," Gay said. "I tried to stay relaxed and bring it home, but it wasn't enough."

Dix, who won the 100 meters and placed second at the U.S. nationals last weekend, said his race experience had helped, "but I'm a little beat up, too."

"I was a little sloppy out of the blocks, but I was able to hold on," he added. "Tyson gave me great competition."

Oliver, the Olympic bronze medalist, equaled Dominique Arnold's national record with his second consecutive lifetime best. He ran 12.93 to win the U.S. championships last Sunday.

Only world record holder Dayron Robles (12.87) of Cuba and China's Liu Xiang have run faster.

"I didn't get a great start but I brought it home," Oliver said.

The American left countryman Ryan Wilson (13.16) well behind in second spot.

Jamaican Veronica Campbell-Brown, the Olympic 200 champion, surprised a talented 100 field with a personal best and season-leading 10.78 seconds to leave her thinking she might double at next year's world championships.

Olympic 100 gold medalist Shelly-Ann Fraser trailed in 10.82, just ahead of American Carmelita Jeter (10.83).

Three other season-leading marks were set.

American world champion Christian Cantwell used a last-effort throw of 22.41 meters to win the shot put, and world indoor 800 meters champion Mariya Savinova of Russia clocked 1:57.56 to beat Olympic 1,500 gold medalist Nancy Langat of Kenya at the shorter distance.

Sudan's Abubaker Kaki added a fifth season-leading mark when he took the infrequently run 1,000 meters in 2:13.62.

Kenyan Olympic 1,500 champion Asbel Kiprop just missed another when he won the mile in 3:49.75.

Olympic long jump champion Irving Saladino of Panama pulled a mild surprise as he used a wind-assisted leap of 8.46 meters to beat U.S. world gold medalist Dwight Phillips (8.41).

Brazilian world indoor gold medalist Fabiana Murer also came out on top, winning the women's pole vault over Polish world champion Anna Rogowska. Both cleared 4.58 meters. U.S. world leader Jenn Shur failed to clear a height.

Wal-Mart recalls underwear after Alabama preacher files complaint

A local pastor’s complaint about a brand of underwear being sold with “pornographic” pictures on the packaging at the Cullman Walmart reportedly led to a recall of the product.

Frank Boren, pastor of New Hope Christian Center Church of God in the Springhill community, said he noticed the questionable underwear package while shopping at the store in May.

“I was in there shopping for some underwear one day, and looked at the men’s pictures on the packaging,” he said. “On a few of the packages they were very pornographic in the way they were dressed, in skimpy underwear, so I went to the manager and asked her if she thought it was inappropriate to be displayed.”

After filing a few more complaints in the following weeks, Boren said the questionable packaging eventually disappeared from the store’s shelves.

Cullman Walmart store manager Nancy Valentine said Boren’s concerns were forwarded to the corporate office, and an eventual recall of that packaging was likely the result of similar complaints.

“A customer was upset about the picture on the underwear packaging and we sent his concerns to the home office,” she said. “I believe there was a recall on that product packaging later on.”

Boren said he wanted to thank Valentine and Cullman County Sheriff Tyler Roden for their assistance in the matter.

When asked about his role in the reported recall, Roden said he listened to Boren’s complaint — though the issue mostly fell to the discretion of Walmart officials.

“He was concerned about the packaging on some of the men’s underwear being too revealing, in his opinion, to the point that he thought it was pornographic,” he said. “This gentleman voiced his concerns about that.”

If he found it pornographic, that means he found it sexually exciting, right?

Man accused of spraying women in supermarket with semen "never had any issues"

The Montgomery County man accused of spraying semen from a bottle onto five female shoppers holds an undergraduate degree in criminal justice, worked as an armed guard at a government installation, trained as a body builder and, until recently, was known for his gentle manners.

Michael W. Edwards, 28, graduated in 2006 from the University of Maryland College Park, according to the registrar's office. He worked for a security firm and had a longtime girlfriend.

"He's never had any issues," his mother, Diane Edwards, said in an interview. "He grew up in the church."

But authorities said that Edwards is implicated in the latest three cases because of video recordings on his cellphone.

Those videos, apparently taken by Edwards, show him spraying semen on the backs of three women inside the Giant supermarket on Muddy Branch Road in Gaithersburg in early July, according to Gaithersburg Detective Patrick Word's signed affidavit filed in court.

Detectives think that Edwards used a small bottle similar to those used to hold portable hand sanitizer. They say he confessed to the incidents, four at the Giant and one at a Michaels crafts store in the Kentlands shopping center dating back to November, according to court records. Detectives have charged him with five counts of second-degree assault and say there might be additional victims.

"We're examining sources and sites to see if there was a subculture he was involved with," Word said. He said he has found no evidence that the videos were posted online.

Edwards, who was being held Saturday on a $50,000 bond, had no criminal record prior to the case, according to police and his attorneys.

"He does have an explanation and an expectation that he is going to be found not guilty of these accusations," defense attorney David Martella said.

Edwards worked for a private firm, Stronghold Security, guarding the front gate and making rounds at the Washington drinking water treatment plant on MacArthur Boulevard, which is part of the Washington Aqueduct, according to court records and Tom Jacobus, general manager of the facility.

"He did his job and brought no attention to himself," Jacobus said.

Edwards cleared a background check before getting his latest job, Jacobus said. After the allegations came to light, he was removed from his duties. There were no indications that Edwards had done anything untoward at the plant.

"We pay a lot of attention to what goes on here," Jacobus said.

Diane Edwards spoke on her son's behalf at a court hearing Thursday and told a judge that she would take her son into her home if he is released. He was living alone in an apartment in Montgomery County at the time of his arrest, according to court records.

Diane Edwards said her son's girlfriend of 10 years has stood with him since the charges were filed. She said that although her son has only been charged, extensive media attention gives the impression that he already has been convicted. "It's very sad," she said. "He can't work."

The case began July 15, when police were called to Giant. Using store surveillance video and other clues, detectives charged Edwards with squirting semen onto a woman as he followed her out of the store.

In that case, and in the case at Michaels, detectives tested clothing worn by the victims -- a skirt from the Giant shopper, a sweater from the Michaels shopper -- and they came back positive for semen, according to court records. In the other cases, detectives don't know who the alleged victims are. They have not stepped forward, authorities say, perhaps because they don't know what happened.

What are the odds, 2 band members commit suicide at festivals in the same week?

link

family of a young rock singer were yesterday 'devastated' by his apparent suicide.

Charles Haddon, 22, frontman of the band Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, died after jumping from a 60ft satellite mast after playing in front of a sell-out crowd at a music festival in Belgium.

Fans who saw a video of the group's final performance hours before the former public schoolboy's death suggested that he had looked 'disorientated'.

The British pop singer’s fatal fall took place hours after a girl had been injured by another member of his electro-pop band diving off the stage.

During the performance by the Camden-based band, fellow group member Joe Hutchinson, 22, dived into the crowd, injuring a young woman. It is believed Haddon also jumped into the crowd.

The up-and-coming group, who have performed at Glastonbury and been aired on Radio 1, finished and left the stage.

The singer, who attended Rugby School, was said to be ‘very down’ after Friday’s gig at the three-day Pukkelpop festival in Belgium, which attracted 180,000 people this weekend. Hours later he fell to his death.

There were chaotic scenes as the injured girl was rushed to hospital. A crowd member said: ‘Medics arrived to look after the girl. She seemed to be in bad way.

‘A few hours later Haddon was seen climbing the 60ft mast in a car park backstage.

‘Then he jumped. It’s pretty clear he’d have died instantly,’ said the source.

Police said the body was found slumped on the ground.

‘We are treating the death as suicide,’ said district attorney Marc Rubens.

Yesterday Haddon's family, who live in Yelvertoft, Northampton, said: 'This is a horrific time.'

Bra gets lawyer barred from jail

Attorney Brittney Horstman was not packing heat.

She was wearing an underwire bra.

And when the metal detector went off on a visit to the Miami Federal Detention Center, security guards wouldn't let Horstman in to see her client.

The attorney reminded guards of a detention center ``memo'' allowing female attorneys wearing an underwire bra to enter. But the guards would not relent.

Horstman stepped into a bathroom and removed her bra. In blouse and jacket, she returned, and cleared the walk-through detector.

Again, guards refused to let her pass -- now, because she was braless, which is against prison dress code guidelines.

``So, simply because I was a woman who wore a specific bra, my client was denied access to his attorney today,'' Horstman e-mailed a group of fellow lawyers on June 4. ``This is completely unacceptable.''

``You are a true defense attorney taking your bra off to try to see your client in jail!'' Horstman's colleague, attorney Carmen Vizcaino, said in an e-mail. ``Betcha none of the guys have done that for their clients.''

This is not the first time guards at the downtown Miami inmate facility have taken exception to the undergarments of female attorneys coming in to see their clients.

A few years ago, the Federal Public Defender's Office, which represents inmates held at FDC-Miami before trial, hammered out an arrangement with the prison allowing female lawyers entry if guards determine -- by using a wand -- that their underwire bras are setting off the detector. Once it's confirmed, the woman can enter.

FDC-Miami officials declined to comment. People familiar with the procedure say the guards on duty that Friday probably didn't get the ``memo.''

A spokeswoman referred a reporter to its dress code posted on the prison facility's Web page. The policy requires that women wear bras, but doesn't specifically prohibit underwire styles.

But the FDC's dress code, which stresses ``appropriate attire,'' has a laundry list of restrictions. Women, for example, cannot wear sweat pants, sweat shirts, sun dresses, leotards, wraparound skirts, crop tops, low cut blouses, zippered dresses/shirts, button-down dresses/skirts or low-cut dresses.

They also cannot wear ``any type of garment that is see-through . . . or clothing that is tight and sexually suggestive or revealing.''

As for both women and men, the FDC prohibits ``any clothing similar to that issued to staff or inmates: khaki, orange, green military fatigue, and plain white T-shirts.''

The Horstman incident was worked out after the Federal Public Defender's Office contacted Warden Linda McGrew.

``The incident, while regrettable and unfortunate, appears to be an aberration,'' said Michael Caruso, the public defender's chief assistant.

The warden ``conducted her own inquiry, she resolved the situation to our satisfaction and she said it won't happen again,'' he said.

Horstman, a former lawyer in the Miami-Dade Public Defender's Office who is now in private practice, declined to comment.

She noted in her e-mail to colleagues that she had been allowed into the FDC with an underwire bra in the past -- but not on June 4.

At least one other woman, former Miami federal prosecutor Lilly Ann Sanchez, said she also had trouble getting into the FDC to see clients a few years ago.

Female attorneys always thought the FDC's anti-underwire bra policy was ``discriminatory,'' and were relieved when the Federal Public Defender's Office and the prison worked out an agreement, she said.

``I had several instances where I was wearing an underwire bra and they wouldn't let me in,'' said Sanchez, who now practices criminal defense law.

``One time, I went into the bathroom and took it off so I could clear the metal detectors.''

Karma, irony, or just a hazard of the job?

Cow crushes meat worker

A MEATWORKER has a suspected fractured pelvis after a cow crushed him against a wall in Melbourne's west.

The 48-year-old man was pinned against the wall as he tried to coax the beast along a corridor at Brooklyn about 2.30pm today.

Paramedic Ross Parker said the man was hurt as the cow surged forward.

"It's believed that his body rolled against the wall as the cow moved past before he fell to the ground,’’ Mr Parker said.

"Thankfully he didn’t hit his head, but he had pain through his pelvis making it too difficult to stand.’’

The distressed worker was given pain relief and taken to The Alfred hospital in a stable condition.
