Tony McAndrew revealed his frustration after seeing Villa under-18s defeated 3-2 by Birmingham City.

McAndrew was unhappy his Young Lions didn't get the ball down and play enough football, despite leading 2-1 at half-time.

After falling behind, the claret and blue troops took an interval lead courtesy of Kofi Poyser and Gary Gardner.

Poyser slammed home a volley following an impressive centre while Gardner controlled brilliantly before producing an exquisite finish.

But a quick double midway through the second half did for McAndrew's academy outfit.

He said: "It was a windy day with plenty of rain but there are no excuses for the performance.

"We didn't apply ourselves properly and we didn't play the game properly. Consequently, the performance was well below par and we lost.

"I have no complaints about the result.

"The performance was well below what we expect. We have watched the game again and we have told them we are very disappointed with the attitude, application and way we went about our work. It just wasn't good enough.

"There was an unwillingness to get the ball down and play. We didn't try and get it down. We managed it about twice during the game, which is totally unacceptable from our level."

VILLA: Dau; Grocott, Halfhuid, Williams, Deeney; Lampkin, Carruthers, Gardner, Simmonds; Poyser, Berry. Subs: Roberts (for Simmonds), Taylor (for Poyser), Blythe (for Lampkin), Barrett, Stieber.

Blimey...

...and the Academy team crept away with their tails between their legs...
