I think i disliked the NME more towards the end as it got more and more like Smash Hits, all glossy with posters.  Q was just a bit dull, I probably only read it a few times whereas I'd get the NME every week.

Trying to think about the point where I gave up on the NME. I was with Sounds till the end, Melody Maker was a goths paper. NME, I think I must have stopped around 2001. Probably after the arse end of Britpop. It got repetitive and featured the same bands all the time. Certainly in wacky Smash Hits type scenarios. I definitely ditched it pre glossyness

Those interested in the vintage music press days could do worse than listen to the Chart Music podcast. The show does retrospectives of old episodes of ToTP (not the ones with the king paedo himself mind) with a bunch of old Melody Maker writers and has pretty regular anecdotes about their time at the paper. They did a bonus show which featured 2 of the writers that were there at the end which covered a lot of their experience as the thing died which is a very good, if angry, listen.

Shows very funny as well - I never bothered with ToTP as a kid and despite most of the period covered being well before my time (they focus a lot of the late 70s early 80s period - lovingly known as the Eiventies) its still a great listen.

On a different topic, I don't love the way the BBC seem to have decided to simply memory-hole the entire period when Saville was host of this show. I don't really watch TOTP2, though my parents do, so I sometimes see bits of it, and I appreciate that the contents of the show are not some pressing national issue. That said, I don't see why it's healthy to pretend that about a decade simply never happened, because the host was up to crimes. Obviously they shouldn't show him, but they could just edit him out and replace him with someone from nowadays introducing the songs. Frankly, the BBC's 'institutional amnesia' approach doesn't convince me that they've learned the relevant lessons from Saville.

They still haven’t removed the Eric Gill sculpture over the entrance to Broadcasting House.

For such a large organisation supposedly based around creative people, they do struggle with any sort of strategy or plan on these things.

That's why.

Creative types don't plan :D

Went on a bit of a rooftop safari with some roofers and scaffolders today.

At the top of the building there was a relatively old vertical fixed ladder access, no hoops and a bit restricted in places making it tricky to say the least. I was absolutely at the limit of what I could do without bottling it and telling the others I couldn’t go any further. Proper scary.

We get to the top and the scaffold guy announces ‘shit, that was scary’. The roofer agreed and said he hadn’t wanted to be the one that couldn’t do it.

I didn’t know whether to be pleased they were as scared as me, or annoyed we’d all done it because the others were doing it, or scared that I’d climbed a roof that roofers and scaffolders thought was scary.

We all agreed we wouldn’t be doing it again.

When do you think you'll have the nerve to get down?

With gravy?

Imagine being stuck up high on a roof out of sight, with some burly workmen and asking if any of them like a bit of gravy on their batter?

we’ve sent the scaffolder down to get chips.

You could have used part of the ladder to get chips, you could have...no wait, come back. Oh....

I was going to say “rung”  for them.

Had my second mri scan today after they found something in my first scan a couple of weeks ago, the original scan was to look for a cause of my essential tremor, found out before my second scan they are looking for early onset Parkinson's disease

Will have to wait for the results and take it from there

Hi mate, got my fingers crossed for you. Did they give you an idea of when the results will be ready?

I have, and have had essential tremor for well over 40 years. Can I ask if it was a recent thing for you and why you went on to have an MRI scan. If you would prefer not to share with the world I would understand.

Had it for years, just got more prominent the last 5 years or so, I've been under a specialist for the last 2 years but he wanted me to see someone more experienced who requested an MRI to find the cause

Like @bielesibub same for me. Been called shakey for most of my life. Friends don’t even mention it these days, just a bad shake in my hands. Sorry about the Parkinsons. I am prompted to make sure I keep an eye on mine.

I hope the results are as good as they can be and lead towards some way of helping you.

I can't imagine what that must be like.  I've had tinnitus for about 10 years now and that's brutal enough...

I've had it most of my life, seems to be worse when I look at my hands, carrying a full pint or a cup of tea is a nightmare! My family 'lovingly' and unpolitically call it, "Dads Spazhands".

Gotta love the sympathy you get from immediate family!
