lapal_fan
My question is, why is it a problem to carry ID?
Paddywhack
There was a pub I went to every now and then in my early 20s where the solitary bar lady would ID me every time I went to the bar, even though there was never more than a handful of people in there. I realise now it must have been a fun little game for her, seeing how many times she could ask before I actually plucked up the courage to say "You've seen it!" 5 times a night, "Can I see your ID please?". "Yep, no problem...*mumbles*...again".

There is a wider issue about assumptions that people do carry ID as a matter of course, should carry ID as a matter of course and that they should produce it in situations other than when completely necessary and how that feeds in to ID card schemes and so on. I'm not suggesting Stevo is making any of those assumptions, btw - I'm just curious about the reasoning when someone says that they do need ID a fair amount. As I said, it's up to him, you, me or anyone else what they decide to carry in their wallet and why.

I thought you were being a little dismissive of as to why anyone would carry their ID on them all the time, as if that was 'silly' or something. I carry mine because I get ID'd sometimes, it's good to have on you should you need it in a shop or to pick something up. I forget things most of the time, without needing to forget about something which is rarely used, but is sometimes essential. Also, if I need my drivers license number, it's useful when you're at work for getting car tax done or whatever .
BOF Posted September 26, 2017 Moderator Share Posted September 26, 2017 On a related note, I've always wondered about the logic behind the following refusal/scenario*. I've seen it play out. "We need some form of ID"*Hands them expired driving licence*"Sorry, this is expired." "I'm still that person." * I haven't really wondered. I know civil servants have to justify their existence and it's one of their depts. that would be responsible for the replacement.

No, as I said, it's of interest as I've never carried ID as a matter of course only for a specific reason (and often specifically required ID - e.g. including a current utility bill for opening an account, &c.) If you want to carry ID with you just in case then fine. Quote I carry mine because I get ID'd sometimes For what? For booze/fags/glue/knives? Do you really look that young? Is that something that you suddenly decide to do (and suddenly decide more than once a year)? I suppose I must because I have been ID'd twice within the last 3 months (buying cider for my wife and some beer for a holiday). I'm 30. It's challenge 25 now, and the cashiers who do ID me are over 50+. For the car tax thing - I had a reminder in the post, didn't do anything with it (becuz i 4got lol) and my wife text me at work saying "remember this" - I just did it there and then luckily. I don't have a PC, only a works laptop which gets switched off at 5. I could do it on my phone, but it's much more fiddly, and often mobile version of websites aren't as good as a computer. Little things like that, having my ID on me, have helped. I've never been asked for ID in any other capacity, so I really don't think of having it on me as a hindrance in any way. Visiting other offices of your company - don't you get given some form of company ID/pass complete with 'lanyard'? Travelling - are you some sort of international jetsetter like Tony? Packages: depends. Sometimes I'm picking up one or two a week. usually requiring ID. Other offices: our company is ridiculous with security. Not only do I have to have ID at other offices that aren't my own, I have to be escorted everywhere. As in never left alone. It's the same with everyone, even a visiting senior director! Travelling - no not really but I do a fair few trips with work these days. Obviously I have my passport but I don't like carrying that around with me when I'm abroad. usually stays locked inthe hotel safe. I've also been to a few bars/clubs, especially in london, that require ID to enter. No matter what your age. Some countires insist you have it with you at all times ..it's the most impractical thing to carry around in your jeans pocket when out on a huge session ... after 3 nights on the piss in Moscow my passport was more dishevelled than I was to the point the woman on border control at the airport threw it back at me and wouldn't let me leave ... she did finally after I presented it to her for the 5th time with my best smile

It is also very much a thin end of the wedge thing. Edited September 26, 2017 by snowychap
