Shepherd in £60m Newcastle offer

Former Newcastle chairman Freddy Shepherd is heading a consortium that is set to launch a £60m takeover bid for the Magpies, BBC Sport understands.

Alan Shearer has been lined up to carry on as manager at the club, who were relegated to the Championship in May. Owner Mike Ashley was asking for £100m but BBC Sport understands Shepherd's offer is likely to be accepted.

Shepherd sold his Newcastle shares to current owner Mike Ashley two years ago as part of a £134m deal for the club. Ashley's total investment in the club is estimated at £244m, which includes paying off debts and buying new players.

When Ashley first put the club up for sale last September, he hoped to get around £300m. Always a controversial figure, Shepherd was forced out of the club when Ashley bought his controlling interest.

Several other groups, including investors from Singapore, Oman and South Africa, have also shown interest in buying the club. The man in charge of the sale, Keith Harris, the chairman of brokers Seymour Pierce, has said he expected a deal to be concluded by the end of this month.

Newcastle fans clearly know best. They wanted Freddy Sheppard out as they were sick of UEFA Cup/mid-table finishes, they got their 'saviour' in Newcastle "fan" Ashley. They were then sick of Big Sams 'guarenteed to be a decent side, but boring football' tactics, so they bought in Messiah 1 and Messiah 2, who combined for a swift and no-nonesense relegation. What great fans. "**** the club, as long as we're happy, that's all that matters".

And according to SSN Habib Beye is stuck in the Caribbean having lost his passport!

Also Martins has failed to turn up for pre-season training, what a surprise.

Well that first bit was wrong. They have just pictured him at the training ground. :?

Newcastle pay Joey Barton £675,000 a year for image rights

The extent of Newcastle United's disastrous management in recent seasons can be exposed by The Sunday Telegraph with the revelation that the club is still paying their notorious midfielder, Joey Barton, £675,000 per year for his image rights.

Newcastle are desperate to reduce their wage bill and this weekend owner Mike Ashley has been in discussions to sell the club for £100 million.

But prospective buyers will be concerned that Barton, who spent 11 weeks in prison last summer for common assault and affray, has the highest "image rights" deal at the club according to a well-placed source.

Barton's deal was agreed in June 2007, before his jail term, but at a time when he was being investigated by the police for his attack on his then Manchester City team-mate Ousmane Dabo.

With Michael Owen at the end of his contract, Barton's image rights payments – which work out at roughly £13,000 a week – are believed to be at least £200,000 higher than those of his best paid team-mates. While most high profile players receive just over 10 per cent of their basic salary, Barton, whose contract runs until 2012, is paid just over 20 per cent.

Beyond belief: Newcastle were relegated, the club is in crisis but STILL players land a £10m bonus

Newcastle's shamed players are about to share a £10million reward for their disastrous relegation campaign in another startling illustration of the financial shambles that has engulfed St James' Park.

In a development that will infuriate an already despairing Toon Army, it has emerged that beleaguered owner Mike Ashley is committed to paying his players massive 'bonuses' at the end of this month, less than six weeks after they tamely surrendered Newcastle's place in the Barclays Premier League.

With senior figures such as Michael Owen and Mark Viduka due annual loyalty payments believed to be in the region of £400,000, the overall bill will be around £10m.

Image rights for Barton

Loyalty bonus for Owen for reaching the end of his contract

Performance bonuses for the team for going down

No wage reduction clauses for relegation

Players getting annual 15-25% salary increases despite relegation

13 players still on over 50k

Geremi on 65k

No manager

A shite squad

Deluded fan base

Financial meltdown awaits... I wonder if anyone would be daft enough to buy the club without completing due dilegence? :D

I read in one of the morning papers today (I forget which) that several of the first team turned up late for training too, probably because they knew there would be no manager there.

Newcastle are a **** disaster. No way are they going to get promoted at the first time of asking.

they all seem surprisingly happy & upbeat.

I recon some of those things are made up rumours or at very least the standard bizare things that go on in football at all clubs like the loyalty bonuses for Owen/Viduka.

It is very easy for papers to spin things and write all sorts of stuff about Newcastle right now becuase people are ready to lap it all up.
