chrisp65
yeah took me a long time to get around to Hurt Locker thought it was rather good, appreciated the fact it wasn't just a star vehicle, I thought that not having an obvious 'star' helped with the suspense as you felt characters could go bang at any point and it wasn't Avatar or Batman or any other comic book rehash
CVByrne
Avatar is probably my most hated movie ever. Everything about it is what I hate about modern cinema. So for that I'm glad Hurt Locker won best film and Best Director.

chrisp65
I dunno, there's some pretty big names in Hurt Locker. I'm catching up with films via cheap supermarket dvd's. I'm currently mostly mid 70's, big names are Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds.

Pelle
Now I've seen Vertigo. Really good. Then I just had to go on and watch Rear window. Also really good. I'm in a bit of a Hitchcock mode right now. Helps two have two box sets with 14 of his films. So far I've seen six of them with Rope being the only quite boring one. Not bad, but a bit boring. villa4europe
hurt locker was one of them that id seen total film talk up in a preview and then saw the opening weekend before looking at any reviews and possibly months before the award season guff, IMO makes a huge difference, same with crash (which id never heard of but it was the only film on) and slumdog (which was on at merry hill odeon mystery monday a good 6 weeks before proper release) going in to see avatar having been told for the previous 6 months that it will be the biggest movie ever really didnt help it, watching it in 3D and not enjoying it didnt help it either, i think its better on a big quality HD tv getting the best out of the colours personally i thought the blind side and an education were better than both, and so is the winner of the foreign film the secrets in their eyes, but there was some rubbish nominations that year, i can remember clooney getting loads of hype for playing himself for 2 hours in up in he air (which IMO is boring) a serious man IMO was awful, district 9 was ok at best and inglorious basterds whilst being a good film wasnt that good, compare it to 2005 for example (good night and good luck, munich, crash, brokeback, capote IMO 5 brilliant films)
DiegoD
It's quite amazing how any people don't like this movie. I don't know anyone who has seen it that likes it. Such a contrast to the movie critics. I think it's clear that they're being pushed to review movies in relation to what masses will enjoy and away from what is actually any good. Looper was terrible. I can understand not liking the movie but I don't get how you can say it was terrible. The acting was good, it had good production values and the story was a fun ride, even if you want to complain that it derives from T2 and 12 monkeys. coda
A problem with Looper was expectation versus reality. I think its hype stemmed from the fact that JGL has recently been in two massive Christopher Nolan films. People/critics got a bit carried away. EDIT: possible spoiler deleted, sorry! Brumerican
I don't think Looper was a bad movie at all . I just had higher expectations before seeing it and the promo's were a little misleading . I was expecting a matrix / inception style action sci fi movie instead of 12 Monkeys part 2 . I just found huge chunks of it to be slow and dull and I worked out the end of the movie pretty much as soon as Emily Blunt gets involved. It's certainly worth watching and the Damian kid is absolutely brilliant but it just left me thinking is that it ? Really ?

The story of how that movie was made and the surrounding controversy is much more interesting than the movie itself (which is pretty poor tbh). Ads
I'm not expecting too much, but I've read about it for so long that I think its worth a look. Will have to pick up The Blair Witch and see that. Apparently they'd never seen Cannibal Holocaust when they made that. Not seen it since it was on in the cinema all those years ago- and I wasn't impressed, but maybe I was too young to get it?
BOF Posted October 16, 2012 Moderator Share Posted October 16, 2012 Ads, is it the uncut version? I have the uncut on VHS (from back then). How and where did you get it on DVD? Usually the BBFC chop them to protect our little eyes (bless them). I don't want to give anything away but I believe there won't be a turtle in your version, if it's a genuine copy. The story of how that movie was made and the surrounding controversy is much more interesting than the movie itself (which is pretty poor tbh). Aye. We watched all that stuff when we were teenagers. Scoured the video shops for banned or valuable movies. Saw Holocaust, Ferox, Anthropophagus, had an unopened original Clockwork Orange while it was still banned. Ah, fun times. I think I turned out normal enough too

BOF Posted October 16, 2012 Moderator Share Posted October 16, 2012 It's grim and unpleasant but it tries to be. Even the soundtrack adds distress to scenes. It's a while since I've watched it. Dark movie. But must be seen
