The Guard needed to be funnier for me. It's not a bad film at all and has it's laughs but the clear similarity (as you'd expect) with In Bruges only serves to remind you that that was a more successful film.

ROTPOTA is fun. Silly, but fun.

Black Swan is a great film. It's a shrieking homage to a load of 70s psychological horror films.

I do agree that some of the effects a bit ropey though - I rewatched it the other night and noticed that it looked a little rough. Still an enjoyable mad romp though.

Super 8 I can understand someone disliking. I thought it was alright but full of little annoyances.

Loved Black Swan in all honesty and I still think Aronofsky deserved an Oscar for it. I know what you mean about some of the effects being a bit ropey, yet the lighting and everything else is spot on. Plus it is a fantastic ride...

I'm also a fan of Super 8 and thought it was a nice homage to old Spielberg material.

On another note, I watched Eden Lake again the other night. I'm still a fan of it and it is pretty scary due to the reality of it all.

Seems like Ridley Scott has suddenly become aware that death is round the corner and he wants to atone for Robin Hood.

I didn't actually mind Robin Hood. Far from being a great film or anything like that, yet it was enjoyable (to a degree). I think the main issue was Crowe as Robin Hood to be honest. Pretty big flaw being that he's the main character though.

I have never understood why Scott gets so much stick for Kingdom Of Heaven either. The director's cut is fantastic and I actually think it's a very good film overall.

Because its got bloom in it, directors cut or not he is still terrible as he is in everything.

Scott also made G.I Jane.

Watched "Casino" for the first time yesterday.

Brilliant.

Great film. As good as Goodfellas is, I think Casino is slightly better IMO.

Loved Goodfellas but haven't seen it for a long time. Might watch it again this weekend to make the comparison

I thought Robin Hood and Kingdom of Heaven were both really shit, to be quite honest. Kingdom of Heaven especially. That was terrible, although granted I haven't seen the director's cut

i watched the extended edition of kingdom of heaven yesterday, the extra scenes do make it better but overall its still a bit shit, which is a shame because IMO apart from the pretty much film ruining mis cast of bloom its excellently cast and acted (irons, norton, green, neeson, the 2 main muslim guys all superb IMO)

its just one of those films that even though i didnt know the historical accuracy i sat there quite confident that most of it was bollocks (see braveheart too) which hinders my enjoyment of it

I thought both Robin Hood and Kingdom of Heaven was good. Especially Robin Hood. It was different to other Robin Hood-films.

Have been watching a few other not so popular films the last few days.

Red Riding Hood. Not good at all. 3/10. Could've been so much better without the Twilight wannabe love story and with better actors.

The Tourist. I thought it was entertaining, actually. Not great, but decent. 6/10.

Cowboys & aliens. Better than I thought it would be. Also decent. 5/10. The aliens looked shite, though.

I've said before that I really like the Kingdom of Heaven DC in spite of Orloomdo Bland. The DC adds in so many extra scenes and plotpoints, and the main character being apparently played by a chair makes him incredibly easy to ignore. Especially when it's painfully obvious everyone else in the cast is having the time of their lives (Brendan Gleeson and Marton Csokas are clearly enjoying being bastards so much it hurts), and Ridley just knows how to shoot a film. You end up glossing over Orlando's presence. Everytime he's on screen you can subconsciously go 'Oh some guy is having a fight', or 'this fella is saying something important but the only thing that matters is that we know it's probably important, but not why it's important, because we know this story already'.

It's well made and has some decent things to say, and is one of the only films I can recall seeing that is rather careful to point out that the enemy aren't heartless bastards - they just disagree. Saladhin is a great presence in it. The historical accuracy of it is nonsense, IIRC, but it doesn't really matter.

EDIT - It also has Eva Green in it, and I'd drag my body over hot coals with using only my mouth to spend 5 minutes in her presence. Gorgeous, stunning... drooldrooldrool

Robin Hood is Ridley Scott knocking out a film because he felt he should. It's obvious that it's actually a film cobbled together from another idea and script (originally the film was to be called Nottingham and focus on a slightly different take on the myth, from the perspective of a rather more sympathetic Sheriff of Nottingham) and it ends up being a mess. Rather like Crowe's accent, which seems unable to maintain a single region of the UK, and even hops across the Irish Sea a few times. But since it does have such presences like Crowe in it, and because it's Ridley, it's quite watchable.

Enjoyed ROTPOTA. Could do with a few more shots of the lovely lady Pinto but you can't have it all.

The Guard was grand, though it really bugged me that it was set in Galway but he was driving around in Dublin plates. Perhaps I'm missing something.

Regarding Kingdom of Heaven. I fell asleep. I rarely fall asleep during a film, but I did during that. I think Ridley's output has been 'meh' for.a while. Same with most directors though, like Sickboy's theory: You have it, and then you don't. Hence I look forward to Prometheus with hope rather than expectation.

I'm sorry, but I found this so egregiously bad I just have to put this in: :puke:

5/10 is about right, though.

its strange that IMO in dark shadows when she is trying to be sexy she comes across rather strange and unattractive, has a weird mouth/smile that id never spotted before

I honestly think it's impossible for her to look bad. Theres just something about her. Phwoar. I think it almost helps that I'd completely believe theres just a little 'mental' in her.

Anywho I saw the Raid last night.

Hmm. All of us came out with the same reaction - it's fun, but it's not necessarily that good. It has less of a plot and more of a set up. It's quite well made and it's impressive to watch. I'm no big martial arts fan but everything that goes on in the film is impressive to watch, some really cool (and wince worthy) stunts pop up and you have a laugh. But I have to stop sort of thinking it's genuinely, genuinely good. It's certainly not bad but asides from the action sequences, theres not much there. It also ends quite abruptly, you expect 1 more fight and you don't get it.

I'd say go watch it, especially on a discounted ticket night if you like your action, and especially if you like martial arts movies.

Never been much of an Eva Green fan. Don't really see the attractiveness.

In fact, one of my only complaints about Casino Royale was that I didn't think she was hot enough to be a Bond Girl

I pity you that your eyes clearly don't work ;).

I dunno... theres just something about her.

I think she was perfect for that Bond role - she's supposed to be a slightly quirky character and Green seems able to pull off that along with acting as an attractive woman that also isn't a moron.
