The Film Thread

Saw Dune last night. Enjoyed, it was good. Perhaps a tad too long in places (mostly the premonition scenes that seemed to sometimes drag on a bit but even then I understand why).

The soundtrack was overbearing though in an Interstellar kind of way. Didn't bother me in Interstellar but it did at times in this.

Also, the makers said they were very aware that it would be difficult to adapt Dune without basically remaking Star Wars and tried very hard not to do this. However it almost seems impossible to me that they could have made a film as much like Star Wars as this without it actually being a Star Wars film. I know the source material basically forms most of the major beats of Star Wars so it's hard to avoid, but blimey...

I know the answer to the question is Ridley Scott, but still.  Who thought it was a bright idea to cast Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as King/knight in a bleak historic  movie set in 1380's Europe?

I can live with Adam Driver in this movie but Affleck & Damon instantly make it feel like some SNL spoof. Does not work for me, they are terrible.

The scenery is nice and I'm sure the supporting cast is good, but I had to turn The Last Duel off after 35 minutes or so. Maybe I'll return to it one day when I'm really bored but not tonight.

It's quite a good idea when see the three acts, in fact it could have been a very good film, it's easy to get passed killing Eve with Jodie Comer here because she is a very good actor, however, you are right, whilst not terrible, the two you mention, particularly Damon do not work here really. Better casting would have made it considerably better, bang average in the end.

That film had it's positives but yeah overall I'd say it was a miss

Finally watched the latest Bond film. I’m generally not a massive fan of James Bond movies or longer movies but this was really good.

I had heard there was a big twist in the plot and I was still shocked. Really enjoyable.

How is it the 'last' duel then?

I believe it was one of the last judicial duels in France. Basically they acted as a court case. Trial by combat. The winner of the duel would be the one who was considered to be in the right from a legal standpoint.

Duels still occurred but they weren’t judicial.

“The Last Judicial Duel” probably isn’t as catchy a title (and from what I understand it would also be inaccurate).

Fun fact! The actual last duel in France happened in 1967, when two French parliamentatians duelled with small swords (one called another 'stupid', then wouldn't apologise; I am happy to report that the socialist won without hurting his opponent too badly).

Eyes Wide Shut - I had seen this previously and remember particularly liking the way it looked with all the lights but on second viewing I noticed a lot of things that I hadn't previously noticed and liked it much better this time around.

The Shop Around the Corner - Everything about this was wonderful and charming, the whole cast dazzled.

Last Knights with Clive Owen.

Loved the twist, didn't love the ending so much. Worth watching.

Also Doctor Sleep director's cut.

Not always a fan if Stephen King stuff but this was great.
