Popular Post theboyangel
I, Tonya was a very decent biopic about Tonya Harding and her rise and huge fall in the world of figure skating
villakram
Roman J. Israel Esq: A somewhat interesting character tale and kinda fun watching Denzel struggle to stay in character. Johnny English Strikes Again: I really wish more movies were only 80mins long. This is kinda pants and very silly but it's still got a bunch of funny bits and at 80mins is well worth a watch. HanoiVillan
3 hours ago, Rodders said: Absolutely superb, watched this last night, and will be repeating it again soon. It is long, but it completely rewards a patient watch, at turns, hilarious, absurd and heart-breaking, it focusses on a father-daughter relationship that has become a bit estranged over time. He, the older hippie generation, her the career-driven consultant but it is far more nuanced than that and they are not caricatures, as he tries to interrupt her life. The final fifteen minutes is the most fanatastically funny and cathartic pay-off for staying with these characters for the previous two hours. Named it as my film of 2017 on here! Rodders
Hmm, I, Daniel Blake - nice idea, executed terribly. I agree with the key politics of it all - the system is an inherent joke designed to disillusion in its kafka-esque dehumanising monstrosity. But as a film, it was just a ham-acted, crap dialogue propaganda piece. I expect a polemic, of course, but I thought it was just handled poorly. Whilst there are robotic dickheads in all workplaces, it was almost cartoonish the way some of the "baddies" were portrayed, whilst those in need were all salt of the earth flawless heroes with no character flaws at all, which just is needlessly silly and took me out of the film. A welfare state should be there to support everyone, including miserable or annoying bellends, just just Mr perfects like Dan, so don't be afraid to give the characters some rounded colour to them .Likewise, it seemed to suggest employees seemed to revel in telling people to **** off, that they were all jobsworths with zero empathy whatsoever, which just seems so exaggerated. I have used the system myself, and didn't recognise that element myself, though I accept for many other people it is apparently based on lots of anecdotes to support it. tonyh29
Strange choice tonight as we opted for Bohemian Rhapsody even though neither of us are Queen fans what a great film even allowing for the sugar coating in places , Malek has been getting lots of plaudits and rightly so ... there were quiet bits in the film where you could hear the usual cinema rustle of sweet wrappers and slurping of drinks ... when the live Aid segment came on the cinema was fixated on what was a mesmerising performance ,I doubt a single piece of popcorn was eating during the segment it won’t make a Queen fan out of me but I’ll probably read a proper biography of Mercury at some point on the back of it. boring fact , I’ve been to Freddie Mercury’s house in zanzibar where he was briefly lived as a baby

At least if you want it to stay true. Peter Freestone's is probably very accurate, but he's not the best writer. Then there's Jim Hutton's, of course, but he was only a part of his life in his last 6 or 7 years, or something like that. Glad you liked it. Will watch it on Thursday, and can't wait. sne
The Nun Pretty standard Catholicism vs evil horror film that uses the usual tropes and if done well could have been rather good as the story is not that bad. Sadly it wasn't and turns out it was a wasted opportunity. 5-5.5/10 But I do think Taissa Farmiga is pretty good in her role. Really liked her performance in the first American Horror Story season so might be why. Edit: also almost uncanny how much "the nun" looks like Marilyn Manson Edited November 1, 2018 by sne

rodders0223
Unsane, started off well enough, very intriguing. I thought they were going to go for some quite interesting and revealing. Then you have the reveal and realise they aren't going for anything interesting at all.
AJ
Just got back from seeing Bohemian Rhapsody, and I really enjoyed it. As a huge fan, I guess that can be expected. For me, the only thing that was lacking was how so many details were skimmed through, when so much was happening with Queen throughout those years, but I suppose they can only focus on so much in a 2 hour film. If I had my way, I would turn Queen into a 3 season minimum TV series.

Rodders
Peterloo - all about the massacre in 1819. Haven't seen a historical drama for a while and this one was very good, quite shakespearan in a way with various grand speeches about the rights of man, and universal suffrage etc and a cast full of british actors I half recognise from all kinds of random british telly from the past in it. Minor quibble, usually with films about real events there's a post-script scene or text that gives you an idea of what happened after this event, and that didn't happen here, which, given the relative unknown nature of this event ( I like history and had never heard of it ) outside specialists of 19th century british political history, a bit of extra context to think about when leaving the cinema would have been nice, but there we go. sidenote, so many screenings of sodding queen seemed to be going on in the cinema
Demitri_C
Watched the new Halloween last night. Havw to say they did a good job taking it back to its original roots. Feels more like a Halloween film then those scrappy ones with busta rhymes doing a fly kick on Michael Myers. Still confused on the timeline of the film but it was pretty good.
