Refs will be on wank salaries for the abuse they receive, to be honest.  Needs to be way higher.

100%

The answer to me is they have to make it more professional, make it more controlled, pay them more but make them an actual team of professionals based out of st George's park, get them physios, give them training, get them a fitness coach dietician etc etc make it younger, split the VAR teams in to specialised teams with the older guys

It should be set up in a way that entices young footballers dropping out of the game in to reffing, stop targeting PE teachers and make it a viable option

The England Vs Finland ref was from the bundesliga, he was a part timer, it's mad that's still a thing

I don't know why it took so long, but they've obviously checked Archer being offside (which was tight) before then realising that, actually, Armstrong is offside too.

It's quite a clear offside to me the more I watch it.

No idea why there was such fuss - let alone being "absurd" or "ridiculous"

They get up to 200k a year plus a grand each match. That's more than cabinet ministers get paid

200k is the highest paid, lowest is around 70k, plus then the match fees

Sounds a lot to us but in the context of football it's not, it's league one or two wages, pick a player from our youth team, let's say Rory Wilson with his contract winding down, he's rumoured to be on £5k a week so more than a PL ref already as a teenager, he doesn't make it, we release him, what is the incentive for him to stay in PL football in the form of a physio or a coach or a ref? There's none, he'll drop down to the bottom ladder of professional football and still earn more

Football refs to me are ex PE teachers in their mid 40s on 200k a year chasing world class athletes who earn that a week and people wondering why they can't keep up and then like I said look at all the set up the players have, a team of 50+ people puts a PL footballer on a pitch, refs meet up once a month and do their own thing in between, they're using fitness first to get out there - and then what's not talked about is how many refs ignore injuries to pocket the match fees

If you want the best then pay it (TBF that applies to cabinet ministers too...)

How are Watford 5th in the Championship?

I know it isn't the highest quality league in the world but they are bloody awful.

I think it is this, and it's unacceptable. It is not hard to see the bloke in the middle of the 6 yard box.

Waste of everyone's time that huge check.

I wouldn't argue strongly against higher salaries, but the PGMOL would have to be disbanded first.

They would immediately just stick usual garbage like Oliver and Taylor on the top band and nothing would change.

Wealdstone just missed from about 10cm out. Poor guy, what an opportunity on national TV and then he skies it.

The refs are beyond shit. And make no mistake they are making any VAR look bad. But also...shielding it. They've seen a job opportunity pop-up that means they can be refs until their 60s now. They want no one else allowed to use it so they can have full careers on their very nice salaries.

It’s FIFA who won’t let non referees do VAR, not the refs. It wasn’t the refs that brought it in, either. They were fine with the old system. Some of them are indeed terrible and yes they kind of protect each other and appear to come up with some ludicrous stuff, but it’s not them keep changing the laws, or how refs are required to interpret them - handballs, offsides, don’t flag in these circs, all that muddle is not the refs’ doing. They get no help from anyone.
