blandy Posted November 27 Moderator Posted November 27 There’s one of these every year, so what albums or gigs or musical highlights do you have for the year? 2
tonyh29 Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Banquet records near me in Kingston do album launches whereby you get a ticket to see the band perform a live set if you purchase the CD , venue holds maybe 300 people so you get up close and personal. They do similar up and down the country , its very effective , as a result Shed Seven have had 2 number one Albums this year ( very few bands have managed this feat ) having never had one previously (in over 30 years) and James also secured their first number 1 (non compilation album) after 40 years anyway , what it's meant is that instead of my usually purchase of around 1 album a year , I've bought maybe 15 this year Shed 7 A matter of time is probably the best one of the lot , still got that on rotation Tangk by Idles was ok but hasn't really stood up to multiple plays ( seeing them on Friday at Alexander palace so maybe the album will go back on play after this) ..the live show was fantastic though , at one point he was singing inside a photo booth machine taking pictures having crowd surfed his way there ditto Libertines All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade , good live show , album not so memorable The James album was dreadful , played it once , never again ... they even short changed everyone for their album gig , charged £40 for a copy of the album played one hour and were gone , for comparison Shed 7 charged £17 for the album and played a 2 hour plus set Special mention for Cast though for Love Is The Call ..... their gig was inside the actual record store limited to 25 people , semi acoustic the album is very catchy , very Cast sounding , lots of ear worm songs , should be popular with those seeing them at the Oasis gigs and final mention for PolSky , saw them doing a promotion gig in HMV Woking , bought their album to support them , can now actually play it after 6months as I have a vinyl player now got that sort of familiar 80's retro sound to them , probably why I like them bets gig of the year was Suede though without any doubt , I almost felt sorry for the Manic Street Preachers , who went on first and put in a pretty decent performance of their own , only to be blown out the water predictably , but worst gig of the year was Echo and the Bunnymen , the real fan boys seems to love the shows and rave about them , but he was incoherent at times and you couldn't understand a thing he said , the stage lights were set so he was in silhouette the whole time .. the gig had its moments , but on the whole was average 2
Delphouneso Posted November 27 Posted November 27 Alabaster DePlume played at a local church down here in Cornwall. Which is a pretty nuts sentence in itself, not many musicians come this far down, let alone avant garde saxophonists to play in a church I wasn’t aware even hosted gigs. I half expected no one to turn up. Early summer evening, sun setting through the stained glass, saxophone screeching into the abyss. The whole thing was pretty surreal. YouTube link for anyone who hasn’t heard him:

Will be in my List. Godrich has turned the rant down and improved them vastly. Before I used to like the idea of Idles but found them just too ranty in the vocal delivery, not any more 1
mjmooney Posted November 28 VT Supporter Posted November 28 Album: Decemberists, As It Ever Was, So It Will Be Again Gig: Hazjak, The Grove, Leeds. Acoustic duo (friends of mine). Saturday afternoon in a pub with excellent beer. You can keep your arena gigs. 1

VILLAMARV Posted November 28 Posted November 28 Been a quiet year for gig going what with MrsVM's pregnancy, although we did go to a couple or 3. I'm never as on it for new music as you lot - in fact you usually end up introducing me to a few things I otherwise wouldn't find in this thread. But this year, despite all that I'll throw Distorted Sun by Dr Meaker into the mix and was absolutely gig of the year for us aswell. Bristol based live DnB loveliness https://www.drmeaker.co.uk/

leemond2008 Posted November 30 Posted November 30 I've been to a few gigs this year. Stephen Wilson Jr - Probably the best gig I've been to this year, love his album, and I was really surprised by how good his voice was live, nice mix of songs off his debut album, support act was a gal named Zandi Holup and she was fantastic, I've been checking regularly hoping for an album off her. Megan Moroney - really good gig, I love both of her albums, the crowd ranged between 15 year old girls dressed like Emo Cowgirls and sad middle aged men on their own like me, I reckon she's got the potential to blow up and get quite big. Marcus King - fantastic guitarist but I was mainly blown away by the rhythm/joint lead guitarist, he was fooking awesome, they chucked in a couple of sabbath covers as well, as far as actual musicianship goes this was way out in front of anything else. Amigo the Devil - great gig but the venue was so humid I could hardly breath in there, it was a pretty chilled atmosphere so I was happy to keep nipping outside to have a quick vape and cool down a wee bit. Clone Roses/Definitely Might be - I think that is what they were called anyways, meh, they were cover bands, pretty decent but nothing to right home about, I left early because my hip was killing me. I'm pretty sure that I am missing another gig as well but can't think of it at the moment. Next year I've got lined up Jackson Dean, Oasis and Larkin Poe so its a pretty strong start to next year.

Also give Sivert Hoyem a listen - superb singer/songwriter from Norway.
blandy Posted November 30 Author Moderator Posted November 30 I've just looked in my Music library and I've not bought a lot of music this year, though I'll probably fill a few gaps in the next couple of weeks - stuff I've meant to get, but haven't yet.
