Anthony Posted November 26 VT Supporter Posted November 26 This is a twofer: an opportunity for many KWs, and an opportunity for you lot to actually help me out. It's one of those things that's really pissing me off (but shouldn't?), simply because I'm not sure what words to use in my searches. I have a light dimmer switch that looks like this: I want to replace the knob, so it looks more like this: How do I find one? What do I search for? "big fat wide knob for dimmer switch" comes up with... small ones. It's infuriating. FWIW the current one slides off, and I guess it's a standard size. Told you there was plenty KW potential.
Genie Posted November 26 Posted November 26 How about a google image search? It throws up lots of options.
Mr_Dogg Posted November 26 Posted November 26 Like this? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Temperature-Brightness-Adjustable-Controllers-K1/dp/B07FRZ1MM4 Or does not work?
Anthony Posted November 26 Author VT Supporter Posted November 26 Thanks chaps. @sidcow @Mr_Dogg That's all smart stuff. It's just a regular dimmer I need, and already have. I just want a big knob. @Genie I can't find 'owt!
blandy Posted November 26 Moderator Posted November 26 Adjustable Brightness Controller - Search Shopping Quite a few on the link
bickster Posted November 26 Moderator Posted November 26 Just a thought, can't you just source a replacement larger turny button than a standard one, to save replacing the whole unit?
chrisp65 Posted November 26 Posted November 26 Do you live near any bars or clubs? Beer barrels arrive with a plastic cap or disc over the keg connector. These are discarded and will be lying around the yard. Glue one of these to your inadequate knob. Your only task now, to decide if you want the Carling or Strongbow logo on your fancy new dimmer. 2 1 1

Xann Posted November 26 Posted November 26 https://www.architonic.com/en/advanced-search?term=rotary+dimmer Go mad.
sidcow Posted November 26 VT Supporter Posted November 26 I'm not sure why the desire for such a big knob in all honesty. Sometimes a smaller one is just easier to deal with and feels more comfortable. Yes I have rehearsed this before. 1
Colin79 Posted November 26 Posted November 26 (edited) Although the thread is primed for jokes, I'm an Electrician so I'll be the boring one with a bit of dimmer advice Make sure whatever dimmer you get is compatible with your needs or it will fail quickly. There are two main things to look for. 1. There are two types of dimmer switch, leading edge and trailing edge. Leading edge is suitable for incandescent lamps, trailing is suitable for LED lamps (yes LAMPS, bulbs grow in gardens ) 2. Dimmers need a minimum load to work, so if it's rated at 50w and you've got one 20w lamp to operate, it's not going to work. So check the load requirements. This is obviously more important if you have a LED set up as they obviously require a much lower load. Edited November 26 by Colin79

Anthony Posted November 26 Author VT Supporter Posted November 26 Whilst I am grateful for all the advice chaps, as I stated in the first post, I'm just looking for the KNOB, not the switch. I have the dimmer, but the KNOB is tiny. I want to rip it off and put a big one on. Obvs respect for the KW restraint, whilst at the same time, mucho respect for those who lack the KW restraint. 6 hours ago, sidcow said: google Moes dimmer switch Ah, you mean, like the second picture in the first post? Like that?

If you just want a big knob, pop yourself down the DIY shop and buy a big knob and some glue.

Ah, you mean, like the second picture in the first post? Like that? I very much doubt the bit you fit the knob onto will be a universal fit. Maybe @Colin79 can confirm. Things like knobs for ovens and cookers tend to be fairly interchangeable but I'd expect different electrical manufactures to have different fittings. Many I'm wrong. As someone suggested earlier maybe glueing something on will work. A white milk bottle top?
