I'm not sure what you mean by tired knees? Do you mean the quad/hamstring muscles or your calf or all of the above. If the pace was similar to usual and you felt drained way too quickly, it's likely that you've either had a lot going on very lately (crappy sleep, long work days etc.) or perhaps a cold virus. Even a mild cold can do all sorts to your energy levels even if you feel pretty much fine.

Literally my knees were tired. That said I hadnt ate since brealfast, I hadnt slept well, pace was quicker than normal and a lot of hills.

Literally, I've no idea what that feels like... but, I'd say you've explained it. Our bodies are complete shite when poorly fueled/tired.

  • 4 weeks later...

At the start of the year the girly suggested we do a race every month of various lengths - a couple of 5ks, mostly 10ks, building up to one or two half marathons at the end of the year.

All started well, we did a local 5k here in Nuneaton for Jan, then a 10k at the national water sports centre in Nottingham for Feb.

That's when the weather changed...with the first round snow forcing a race in Warwick to be cancelled. We quickly rebooked for another race in March to keep up our aim of one per month, only for the race in Lincoln to be cancelled this morning (race should have started at 11am) due to second round of snow.

All our local races have been cancelled, its a shame training-wise as I find a half a few weeks before a marathon like a key pre-marathon session instead it was 20 miles in the snow. I do have the option of racing a 16 mile XC race that I'm running next weekend but 3 weeks out is pretty close...

A very important running question:

You get home after work and go straight out for a run. You get back home again and have a shower. There's about 3 hours left before bedtime. For the rest of the evening do you...

a ) Put the pants you've been wearing all day back on, they've still got a few more days left in them

b ) Put on a fresh pair of pants on, you live a life of luxury

c ) Go commando, like a carefree hippy

Apologies for getting in the way of the pants conundrum posed, I suppose I should contribute what I’m doing at the mo.

Currently running a touch over 6 miles in about an hour, so the world records are safe for now. Doing that about 2 or 3 times a week, country lanes and A roads. General fitness, chance to clear the head, listen to podcasts etc, the usual.

About 3 years ago I got a bit carried away with it and was doing about 10-11 mile runs 3 times a week.

Unsurprisingly, I developed a dull ache in my knee, so I rested up. When I got back into it a few months later, I think I must have changed my running style as my hip and shoulder started to ache too (it was my left knee, left hip, right shoulder). Pretty sure my hip was bursitis, but as I’m an idiot I didn’t go to the doctor. Put me off for a year or so.

Anyway, no problems at the moment, although could do with some new shoes soon. Sticking at 6 miles for the foreseeable future and will just try and improve the time.

Pants never have more than a day in them  Once they’re off, they don’t come back on.

I tend to run about 5-6k two or three times a week. Haven't had an injury of note for about 2 years now.

As you say its once you cross the 6mile mark that things start to go wrong. I run for the same reasons as you, listen to music, general fitness etc.. I wont be troubling any world records either or even attempting a half but i'm fine with that.

No, I haven't worn a pair of pants for more than a day since I was a smelly teenager, but I've put them back for an evening after a shower and I didn't like it.

I've also done the other two options and I'm not comfortable with any of them to be honest.

I took up running last year to do a half marathon, by the end, I just made it though legs were sore regularly in the weeks leading up to it. This year, I've signed up to a series of 10k races but that's the longest I plan on running for a while. I may try and do the marathon once at some point, to tick it off I guess,  but the 5-10k window is a really nice distance to do, enough to make you feel like you've put some effort in without my legs going to shit.

Although a 2 mile run yesterday morning was the first time I was able to run in 3 weeks due to snow, etc, and I have a 10k on Sunday . Does have the advantage of reducing all expectations to zero, the best way to run a race :D

Post shower new pants on but I guess I am odd as after a shower I put on some roomy pants from my fatter days. These are my sleeping in pants. I feel I have said too much.

You must have been massive if you're using your old pants as a sleeping bag.
