I just hope this doesn't encourage more attempts, as a one off spectacle it was fun to watch but I can see us ending up with time trial after time trial now until someone breaks two hours.

Don't hold your breath.

So you cycling folks, what kind of machinery are you riding?

I ask because I'm in the market for a road bike as I started bike commuting (just to get something different/extra in) on my mountain bike, which is somewhat of a tank. Well and cycling long distances and perhaps doing a tri or two sometime in the future also interest me. Any recommendations etc. appreciated!

I have 3 different makes for 3 different types, a Boardman cyclocross, a Cervelo R3 road bike and a specialised shiv TT, but if I was buying a road bike again I would look at Canyon for sure, but they are sent from Germany so you would need to find out what size you are (by trying other makes and comparing dimensions).

After years of running because I've felt I should rather than actually enjoying it, I've really got the running bug back lately.

It's largely thanks to doing my first park run earlier this month and I'm hooked. I've only done 3 so far, but I was delighted to shave two minutes off my PB on Saturday.

I'm doing the Birmingham Black Country Half Marathon on Saturday, a nice flat run from Wolvo to Brum along the canal, so I'm hoping to get a PB on that too. My best is 2hrs 10 minutes, I'd love to get below 2 hours but that's probably asking a bit too much of myself.

What wave you in? I'll come and say hello. I'm in wave F 10.20

Have you done Dudley parkrun? That's brilliant. Dell stadium behind Brierley Hill.

I just use my Giant Defy 1 road bike with clip on bars. Did buy a TT bike but sold it again after I couldn't get comfy on it.

I really like Giant bikes but as Andy says, Canyon are the bikes to beat at the moment.

I'm later than you, Wave N, 12.05. Have you done it before?

Yup, that's the one I've been doing! I've done Dudley twice and Wyre Forest once. I'm quite looking forward to volunteering one week for some reason, maybe just to get that really smug feeling like when you give to charity. :D

EDIT: With my super detective skills and my stalking habbits, I've found all your park run results. Muahahaha.

Good skills!

Does the run director at Dudley remind you a bit of Chris Martin?

Yes I've done BBCHM every year(ish) for a few years. My favourite one of the year. Don't go too fast cos it's a bit long so not a PB course. Also normally baking and if it is have a drink at every station. About 4 miles in is the Coseley tunnel which is ace, then it seems to take forever to get through Smethwick towards the end. I go for a few pints and a burger in the Pitcher & Piano after, then train back to the Grove for a couple at the beer festival, then swing over to watch the Timberhonger race in the evening. Spectacular day :)

Anybody ever done a 'race at your pace'?

Basically pay £14, set your self a distance of either 25, 50, 75, 100 or 200 miles to run in a month, upload your proof at the end and get a medal and a tshirt when you've done it.

I signed up for 100 miles in July and Mrs P laughed at me for being a mug. I think she's probably right, but I'm running the Birmingham Marathon in October and apart from parkrun and the odd 10k or half marathon event here and there, I'm not doing much else, nowhere near the training I should be doing. So I think it'll be good motivation for me to get out there, because I'd hate to not do it now.

Ommmm that's naughty! Can you do that?

Yeaaaaah. I always have. Just ignore what they say and go in whatever wave you want.

@darrenm how did you get on?

You weren't lying, it was long and hot! (oo-er). I felt great up until about mile 8 or 9, then I just felt really dehydrated. I got 2hrs 23 minutes, so pretty terrible, I had to walk the last few miles. :(

Yesterday morning I went down to Halesowen to sign up for the 10k, got 1hr 22 seconds in that. My legs are like jelly this morning.

1:41 as I was nursing my chest and my left knee started playing up at about 7 miles.

It wasn't that hot this time ;) normally it's absolutely baking. I always take 1 cup to drink and 1 cup to throw over my cap at every drink station.

Course is great isn't it? Unique and flat but you really don't want those steep bridges near the end! And it seems to take forever to get to the finish line once you can see Brindley Place.

Did you start in the wave you said? Nobody was checking, you could have started anywhere you wanted.

Which 10k? You mean you did it yesterday?

1:41 is awesome, I can only dream of that kind of a time!

Started in the right wave, yeah. Next time I might try and sneak in an earlier one then, it was too hot for me in the afternoon.

Really enjoyed the course, but I did find the overtaking a bit of a ballache after a while, I was happier when it spread about a bit and the paths widened. I was terrified of being pushed in the canal, or pushing someone else in.

I didn't believe how dark the tunnel would be, I went light headed in there.

Yeah, I went in to Halesowen at 8am to sign up for the Black Country Run, went home for a bit and then ran it at 9:45. I thought I'd end up walking it after Saturday, but was fairly happy with my time considering.

I remember a couple of years ago meeting someone I hadn't seen for years after the end of this run. I'd just run 2.10 and I asked him what he did and he said 1.35. I thought I'd never be able to get there but continual running you just keep getting faster without realising it. I normally would be closer to 1.30 if I'm running right and someone like @SteveMac and @andyjsg will be closer to 1.20 / 1.25.

Overtaking can be a pain there and as it's always boiling I don't treat it as a fast run, it's just a social run to the pub. I get the train from the grove to Brum, then to Wolverhampton and run into Brindley Place for the beer and food.

I absolutely love the tunnel. I like running in pitch black at night too. It's sensory deprivation. Just look ahead, get the knees up a bit and enjoy :)

Depending on where you are, I'd recommend the Stratford 10k or the Alcester 10k. They're both fast. Well done on the Black Country Run.
