Pongo Waring Posted November 3 Posted November 3 Why does Emery keep putting them up together when we're winning or drawing a game? It just doesn't work. We lose our shape. Makes more sense if we're a goal or two down but its not something I want to see again. Should be one or the other. Going forward who should start. Duran or Watkins? 1

AndyM3000 Posted November 3 Posted November 3 Duran needs minutes, but it has to be for Watkins. If we are bringing Rogers off though, like we did today, you ideally want to bring on Bailey, Buendia or put McGinn there to keep the structure. The problem is they are all bang out of form and Duran has been good, he's trying to get the form players into the match but it's doing more damage than good. 1
foreveryoung Posted November 3 Posted November 3 Yeah, it's blatent Watkins and Duran does not work together. I didn't like that from Emery, Watkins could have came off, he was ieffective and I'll be shocked if he gets near 20 goals this season. With his experience, I don't expect this inconsistancy anymore from him, but I guess all strikers go through it. Game certainly didn't need 2 strikers today. 2
rodders0223 Posted November 3 Posted November 3 Get Brucey in. He'd have switched to 5-3-2 a month ago. 1

Pongo Waring Posted November 3 Author Posted November 3 I just don't like seeing Emery abandoning his game plan just to make Watkins and Duran happy. Right now he's thinking about them rather than the team.

sharkyvilla Posted November 3 Posted November 3 I didn't think it was as bad against Bournemouth as Duran came deep a lot of the time to play as the link man, today they just both seemed to play as strikers and we had nothing between the lines. Didn't even bother getting any crosses in either. Unless we go for wing backs I think they have to job share.
MaVilla Posted November 3 Posted November 3 who cares if Watkins is put off by having competition, granted we dont know if thats even true, but if it is, its just tough, if you cant deal with competition, you arent fit to play for a top team. On another note, we shouldnt be playing them together, there is a reason in the modern game that almost all top teams plays with 1 striker. As someone else said, it should be Watkins OR Duran sharing the striker slot, not both at the same time, having both of them on at the same time takes more away from the system than it offers. Anyway, its one of multiple issues in the squad, such as the entire of the right side of the team being disjointed, and none of our wide players currently in form, at all, be that on the left or the right.
Farlz Posted November 3 Posted November 3 Watkins really can't play in a pair with anyone. It's clear as day they don't work together, knew as soon as Duran come on it would be a mess. Stop doing it.

He has reached double figures every season at Villa. That is pretty consistent. He even managed it under Gerrard when we were dog turd.

Lets hope he finds some form, cause you right, when he's on it, he generally stays on it for a good part of the season.

That is consistent, having good and bad games over 10 games is normal for any striker.

I just think it's the best balance to have Ollie run the defenders ragged then bring on Duran when they're tired and can't cope with the chaos he brings. I can see why Unai has tried to make it work, I think Buendia struggling as an alternative number 10 hasn't helped. 1
