turvontour Posted October 24 Posted October 24 I said in another thread the other day that my 7 year old who has got into football and Villa over the last year or two genuinely sees Villa as one of the biggest teams in europe and also just a top, top Premier league team. He has no context of the last 5 to 10 years. And he couldn't understand how Chelsea are doing so well around 4th to 6th in the league at the moment. Part jokingly I said he's a bit of a glory hunter as he's only really seen success. Most games are wins in PL, Europe, he's been to 8 games, we've won 7 out the 8 etc. But seriously, is this the point in time that the available neutral might start following us, or has it happened already, or does it come next season if we're still doing this? And what are people feelings towards that if any? We're very very watchable now as aswell as the results, the characters and performances from Duran, Martinez, Rogers etc. Draw people in. 1
ender4 Posted October 24 Posted October 24 Yes definitely more local kids have started wearing Villa football tops at kids clubs. They are now probably Villa fans for life. The biggest change in general mentality I have seen is a friend who has two kids. The friend isn’t into football at all so the kids were not led by family into watching football. Their eldest kid aged 12 is a die hard Man Utd supporter and has been for around 6 years now. The youngest kid aged 7 loves Aston Villa and thinks Man Utd are a nobody team. 2
Czarnikjak Posted October 24 Posted October 24 I started supporting Villa in the 90s when we were reasonably good. Not having any family links to UK I was free to choose any premier league team to support. Does this make me a glory hunter? 1 1
GrootVilla Posted October 24 Posted October 24 My wifes friend has a 6 year old and he wanted a villa shirt for this Christmas 1

Down in Devon, the 5 year old grandson of one of my cleaners has recently told his Arsenal supporting dad that he wants to support Villa. They have picked him up a new Villa shirt, but only for wearing at football practice & not at home, by orders of his dad, lol. And a lot of people around me, who have grown up taking the piss out of Villa, have started to talk about us in a complementary & sometimes envious fashion. Strangers too, when I wear a Villa hat or a Villa shirt while out & about. One of my Spurs supporting mates told me that he wishes that they played like us, & he really loves our Lino art lion. So the message is getting through to modern day fans that we are vastly improved. Edited October 24 by Andy_10 4

Yes, but virtually every kid either becomes a fan because they follow the glory or their parents force them to follow the family team. With a few convinced by friends. So no shame in glory being the original reason you support a team. 1
Popular Post ThunderPower_14 Posted October 24 Popular Post Posted October 24 Everyone who has any interest in football is talking about Duran and knows our best players. Look at Man City. If we continue to be successful and play Champions League, the glory hunters are coming. It'll be a bit startling and probably frustrating for supporters who have been loyally following us for decades, but try to see the positives. Supporters mean revenue, which lets us continue to compete and try to win things. 5
brummybloke Posted October 24 Posted October 24 Foreign supporter wise, it was always if a player from their country played for an English club ( bossie was probably our first noticeable one) aussies started supporting us. Having the future king supporting us also helps with the foreign contingent. Add in the relative success we have had in the last 2 years compared to the wilderness years, the higher profile by qualifying for europe, the likable players ( good players who are actually decent non entitled humans) our manager being fantastic and respected and of course champions league. For the first time in a long time we are people's 2nd team, we are an easy pick for a football fan wanting to pick a team. No world stars bar Emi martinez who made world news in the world cup. The more people wearing the shirt, the more will want to. We won't get an Arab nation supporting us like man city have, but having already had a small African country support us then hate us when samatta was here, I can live with that 1

It's not a bad thing by the way, it's just someone who has chosen a very successful team to support potentially rather than a weaker one who is closer to where they live.

I definitely wouldn't have picked villa if we were at the bottom of the table when I was choosing my team. I just scanned the table in the newspaper from the top, Aston Villa name was there and sounded grand Edited October 24 by Czarnikjak 3
ferguson1 Posted October 24 Posted October 24 Success certainly makes a difference for sure. My 12 year old lad wants the shirts, plays FC25 with his mates and his usual team is Villa. Couple of his mates are also Villa fans, where he was the only one I knew in Primary School. We also went to Portugal and Majorca earlier this year and saw Villa shirts at the airport and taxi drivers talking to us about the Premier League and saying how good Villa are to watch. Definitely more interest in us over the last few years. 1

It'll be more online and international I'd have thought. 1
sharkyvilla Posted October 24 Posted October 24 Seen a few more Villa shirts round my area down south, not kids but probably just people more proud to wear the shirt these days. I think we are becoming a bit of a 'hipster' club for wont of a better word, there's a lot of things to like about us at the moment and a lot of other fans respect the way we have done things. 1

If you didn't join up specifically because you were inspired by the sight of Jordan Bowery, you're not a real fan. 5

Slightly off topic mate. However, this is exactly what I try to refer to, when I tell people dead set against things like new stadiums etc, that there is a totally new generation of fan to think about. So any " new VP " for example, would be " Church " for them, as it currently is for us, and be up to date. Same can be said of any sort of branding and updates. We can't be selfish in these regards to want to hold on to the past. Their are ways to honour our history whilst being among the best and future proofing as well. Edited October 24 by JAMAICAN-VILLAN
