Not Villa related so popping here in Other Football.

When, if ever, do you think they will allow football fans to drink alcohol in sight of the pitch again? It seems such an outdated concept now… was it the early 80s when it was banned?

Pretty much every other sport allows it, and pretty much all of Europe do at football as far as I know…

(sorry if there’s a better thread for this Mods, but I searched and couldn’t find anything).

Try going to a game in Scotland. Alcohol is banned throughout the stadium.

Apart from the hospitality areas of course.

Alcohol in the hospitality areas of the PL is something that I still find utterly stupid

You can't (or at least you're not supposed to) drink in the box during the game, before kick off they'll come and do a drinks order from half time, the boxes in say the trinity with the balcony they'll draw the blinds so that you can't see in to them but if you want a beer you have to go stand at the bar out of sight from the pitch and watch the game on TV

I get that it's what's good for the goose is good for the gander stuff but I can't sit in a box during the game with the blinds closed sipping a beer? Would anyone in the stands be offended by it? On the balcony fair enough I get it (but I'm not sure that bothers me either) but inside the box is a bizarre rule imo

I didn’t know that!

Only before or after the game, not when the match is playing.

But even so, what percentage of fans are corporate hospitality?

hopefully never. they ridiculous culture that apparently now exists where people feel compelled to throw their pints in the air when a goal goes in means that everyone leaves the game soaked in beer as my mates did at young boys away.

Just imagine the  toilets of Villa Park if everyone is drinking throughout the game

People tell me that nowadays the main issue is that some (presumably not very many? but still enough to be noticeable?) fans are turning up having had coke. I don't understand the appeal of watching football off my tits - doesn't sound enjoyable at all - but if that's true then I suppose to some extent the answer to this question might be would drinking lead to a) less coke consumption, replacing it with booze (maybe a small improvement?) or b) mixing coke and booze (worse, even more aggro)?

Let's face it, the minority would ruin it for the majority of fans, they simply can't be trusted and it's better to stay on the safe side.

Yeah, that could be right. There’s always some that will ruin it… but at the moment people get so tanked up before the game, then neck a pint at half time, because you can’t have one with you. If people had to leave their seat to buy a beer and then sit with it in the stand maybe it would slow them down a bit!?

Yeah that's the thing, I can get blind drunk at the football and ruin it for everyone regardless of whether or not they let me drink in the stands

Away games were like stag dos when I was going 10 years ago, 6am crack a can open, doubt that's changed too much and won't change if they let sensible fans have a sip while the game is going on

And based on Dortmund pre season the fans would spend tens of thousands on beer per game, the club would have to change their facilities to cope, probably infrastructure too, Dortmund was definitely geared up towards fans spending the whole day there drinking

I like to have a pint at the stadium before the game, and sometimes I need to rush it.

I'd like to have a beer or 2 and sit down with them.

If there is trouble (I don't think there would be more than now) we should have stewards to cope with it.

From watching our game on Wednesday, it appears there’s an issue with cocaine in the stands

It's not coke. It's snuff tabacco (tabaka) a very popular product in germany and northern Poland. I take it sometimes, totally legal.

I remember going for a shit in the Upper Holte a few years ago before the game, and had some lads banging on the door telling me to hurry up so they can use it for coke. They then booted off because it stank of shit when they went in, as if I was the one using it for the wrong reasons. 😂

English football fans (stereotype) are absolute knobheads, so I imagine the answer is "never".

If society ever gets to the point where binge drinking isn't really a thing, then it may open up.  I have little hope, though.

i guess if prices continue to rise and we find ourselves paying £15-£20 a pint in a stadium, that would reduce amount people drink and also be less likely to throw it in the air having paid that sort of money for it

Unless you're in hospitality.  Hibs have several hospitality venues all with alcohol available, some with a free bar. "Behind the Goals" is open to Season Ticket holders before and after the game and at half time.

edit........apologies should have read all the replies first.. 🤣
