T-Dog Posted September 30 Posted September 30 Throwing this out there, don't care if you're in, out, or against the whole idea either away... Is anyone doing Stoptober this year? Starts tomorrow morning - details here - https://www.sciencefocus.com/the-human-body/stoptober-what-happens-stop-drinking
tonyh29 Posted September 30 Posted September 30 (edited) As I mentioned in another thread , I just did 262 days without alcohol. i was never a regular drinker just a binge drinker ( ie I’d often go a month without alcohol then go out and drink about a months worth in one night ) I’m sure there are health benefits But for me health wise I didn’t notice any difference , I have lost about 10 kilos in weight but that was more from giving up Toblerone and packets of biscuits and hitting the treadmill Having ended my draught I had an all day session at the cricket and then a lads weekend in Bucharest .The first pint I felt a bit weird but by the 7th it was like I’d never been away . Since the trip I’m now 2 weeks without a drink , it might be that I do all of October , really depends how I feel on the day , I’ve got 2 gigs next week , might do them sober … might not Edited October 1 by tonyh29 3
Popular Post MNVillan Posted October 1 Popular Post Posted October 1 I stopped drinking 493 days ago, and I don’t plan on starting up again this month. So yep, I’m in 10
Popular Post Jon Posted October 1 Popular Post Posted October 1 If you wanna quit the booze, do it for your own reasons. It doesn't need a named month like stoptober or dry January. The pub industry is straggling enough without the likes of these months compounding their problems. I don't get it personally and find it a bit gimmicky. Alcoholism is a serious issue imo that transcends these monthly fads. 12
NoelVilla Posted October 1 Posted October 1 I just did September without even thinking about having a drink. So probably not doing Stoptober.

Genie Posted October 1 Posted October 1 I drink fairly rarely these days so doubt it would affect me. It’s probably a decent incentive for heavy drinkers to test themselves.

Tbh after the lads trip a part of me was saying to myself “that’s me done with alcohol for good now “ the weekend itself was great and i loved the whole mates thing but I’m not a shy teenager anymore i probably could have done the same weekend completely sober and it wouldn’t have been much different. next weekend we have a gig in London , talk is we will make a day of it up in Camden and that is a good drinking day out (apart from the cost ) but currently my plan is to do it sober , the thought of beer just isn’t appealing to me … but who knows

I don't get it personally and find it a bit gimmicky. Alcoholism is a serious issue imo that transcends these monthly fads. The point is that when you stop for a month you realise the damage it's doing to you. These months encourage people to try abstinence and then they realise that alcohol isn't be the be all and end all its marketed to be. The pub industry is struggling because the younger generations have realised that and they are more health conscious. There's also far less middle aged men spending the weekend in the pub after a weeks' work. Now they are bringing their kids to whatever and spending time with them. I've basically stopped drinking at home now and I might drink an average of ten pints (total) in a month. It's the most over rated activity in the world by a distance. By pint 3 or 4 the enjoyment has peaked and after that you're just drinking for the sake of it. The easiest way to think about it is when you wake up in the morning how often do you think I wish I had another pint last night? Never. Yet when you don't drink much or leave early and go home you wake up in the morning thinking thank god I left when I did. Now I've a clear head, I'm feeling good and I can do something today instead of sitting on the couch, eating crap food, feeling like shit. A very good test is to go to a pub early, have 3 pints and go home. You'll sit on the couch and be completely exhausted, whatever buzz you had would be long gone and you can feel the damage alcohol is doing to you. 5

I still go to the pub when I'm not drinking. I think it would be a bit sad to only go to the pub for alcohol. I go for the company and the chat.

For me, the two poles of total abstinence or occasional massive binges are equally unappealing. I'm sticking with little and often.
Designer1 Posted October 1 VT Supporter Posted October 1 14 months teetotal now so yeah it's safe to say that will still be the same when November comes around. I have every intention of never drinking again (Fitter/Happier/More Productive etc) 3

Dunno if it always sounds like a huge thing but in truth I never really drank much anyway, usually once a month and I was finding myself doing it for villa TV games The weird thing for me was it wasn't heavy nights and deciding I was too old for the hangovers it was more that I had about 6 months where was eyeing up villa TV games weeks in advance, I was telling the wife my plans, I got 6 beers in, I got adventurous and got 12 beers in, first beer "I love beer" second beer "I love beer!!!" Third beer "what the **** am I doing this is absolutely pointless and achieves nothing" and knocked it on the head for the night, drinking has become futile for me, I don't get it in the same way that I once did, like most things in my life I blame the kids... But like I said I'm down to when I'm on holiday I'll sample the local beer, nothing daft just 1 or 2 in a restaurant on the night, unfortunately ill also class returning back to England for a weekend as a holiday and will do more than sample... 1
lapal_fan Posted October 1 Posted October 1 I find it odd the way alcohol is spoken/written about in this thread. I think I have a healthy relationship with alcohol, I can go months and months without even thinking about it, or I can meet certain friends at the cricket and happily drink all day, getting merry in the process. I never feel guilty about drinking though, it just is what it is to me, take it or leave it. I don't get hangovers generally, which may make a difference and I've never been addicted to it and thought "if I have one, I've got to have more", I'll happily go to the pub and not drink, or even drink a half if required, it just doesn't register on my radar. I'd also never say "I'm never drinking again" because of health or what not, I enjoy drinking when I drink. If I don't want alcohol, there's plenty of choices as alternatives. A nice beer on a summer's day, a nice ale in autumn, a glass of red in a nice setting, a whisky when relaxing.. there's a time for it all, just not on a set schedule. That's my take anyway! 2
