AJG23 Posted September 18 Posted September 18 (edited) I can’t see a thread elsewhere, apologies if someone has already posted about this sad news. https://www.theguardian.com/football/2024/sep/18/toto-schillaci-italy-1990-world-cup-dies-aged-59 Quote The former Italy striker Totò Schillaci, who inspired his country to third place at the 1990 World Cup, has died at the age of 59. Schillaci, who played for clubs including Juventus and Inter, had been taken to hospital in Palermo last week, and a hospital statement a day later said he was receiving treatment to stabilise his heartbeat. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2022. Edited September 18 by limpid fixed format 2
ferguson1 Posted September 18 Posted September 18 (edited) That’s really sad. I was 15 when Italia 90 was on and I was the right age to love the games and the tournament. Run home from school and watch every game. Still think back with fond memories of it all. Watching channel 4 coverage of Italian football wetted the appetite, collecting and swapping Panini Stickers, the music when TV coverage started and England doing well. New Order and World In Motion. McGrath having a great tournament but ultimately losing to the Italians. Schillachi had the tournament of his life and ended up top scorer I think? One of them was a screamer if I remember? Yes I think he got into the team as Vialli was injured/out of favour, don’t think he was a very high profile player but he made his mark in that tournament. I think when most people think of Italia 90 one of the first things that comes to mind are Schillachi and his goals and wild celebrations. Edited September 18 by AJG23 Spelling 1
