nepal_villan Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 Martinez, Yorke, Benteke, Grealish and Barry are must haves for the Premier League era. Mellberg was solid but don't feel he was ever dominant like Laursen.

I only really started supporting and watching Villa from 1986 onwards maybe and even then I was only ten. So from players I’ve watched and enjoyed: Martinez Mellberg McGrath Laursen Staunton Barry Cowans Platt Yorke Watkins Young Subs: Bosnich, Delaney, Wright, Ehiogu, Teale, Milner, Taylor, Benteke, Saunders Probably some glaring omissions here and I’ll kick myself but the team above is what I’m going with for now. No Grealish at all? Surprises me. We'll be similar ages, and me makes my starting XI.
Avfc96 Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 My first game was in 2003. I'd have to go: Emi Mellberg Konsa Laursen Bouma Luiz Barry McGinn Young Watkins Grealish Honourable mentions to: Milner, Petrov, Benteke, Angel, Solano, Mings and a few others.

StewieGriffin Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 All-time is so hard, such an almost impossible thing to do. There's recency bias, the age of the person choosing, common sense picks such as "top scorer and top appearance maker must be automatic picks based on logic"... There's greats that I know were great with/because of this club, yet the preceed my age/support. If I've not seen Dennis Mortimer, Sid Cowans etc play then how could I possibly rate them better than Gareth Barry, Douglas Luiz, or arguably Lee Hendrie? Benteke was unplayable at times, but we had the best of him for 18-24 months. Is that enough? Same with Grealish really. This is "Best X1 to play well for Villa", not necessarily "The most talented to have played for Villa", Having said that, anyone not putting McGrath in their team needs to be assessed

Click on the above link and it should work. Before you vote, if you want to educate yourself about players going all the way back, that's the place to start. Someone put a lot of research into the history. Keep in mind that it's a 2009 article, so it won't contain Emi, Grealish, or anyone else recent. P.S. I now update my list from 3 years ago...I would put Emi as GK now. Edited September 13, 2024 by TomC Fixed typo 1
JPJCB Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 In my time watching villa (1994-present) Martinez mellberg konsa. Mcgrath Barry* Kamara Milner Young Grealish Yorke benteke subs: friedel, mings, Laursen, petrov, McGinn, Watkins *playing him out of position since we have an abundance of CM options and few LBs oh and Emery has to be the manager obviously
AndyM3000 Posted September 13, 2024 Posted September 13, 2024 Martinez Mellberg Konsa Laursen Staunton Milner Barry Luiz Young Benteke Grealish We really haven't had any good full backs at all in the last 20 years or so, I can't remember Staunton that much but if it wasn't him it would be Bouma. 1
